Arts Missoula is seeking nominations for the 21st Annual Missoula Arts & Culture Awards.
Established in 1999, these awards demonstrate the importance of the arts as they relate to Missoula’s quality of life by honoring those who have made significant contributions to the arts community. Individuals and businesses may be nominated in five separate categories:
Individual Artist
– Given to an artist who has shown exceptional achievement in music, visual art, dance, film/video, theater, performance art, choreography or music composition.
Arts Educator
– Given to a dedicated educator (K-University level) who has devoted a career to teaching the arts in an educational environment.
Business Support for the Arts
– Given to a business that has provided long-term support to Missoula arts and cultural organizations
Cultural Vision
– Given to an organization, group or individual who has developed a special project or program that demonstrates unique cultural or artistic vision.
Cultural Ambassador
– Given to an individual or couple who have supported Missoula’s arts community or helped to advance cultural diplomacy through volunteer, administrative, philanthropic, professional, or legislative efforts.
The Arts & Culture Award winners will be honored at Arts Missoula’s annual luncheon scheduled for
Tuesday, April 7, 2020, at 11:30 am
at Missoula’s Doubletree Hotel.

The dark January doldrums can be effortlessly shaken off with powerful belly laughs, which is one reason the Missoula Community Theatre is presenting Ken Ludwig’s hilarious non-musical farce,
Leading Ladies
, Jan. 23-Feb. 2 at the MCT Center for the Performing Arts. Ludwig’s comedies (
Lend Me a Tenor
) are legendary for their fast pace, flamboyant characters, and clever antics of mistaken identity.
Director Rosie Seitz Ayers expresses, “Identity has always been one of the biggest puzzles each individual has to solve for themselves. This play delightfully reminds us how to be true to ourselves and keep looking to find where we relate to others rather than compare our differences.”
Leading Ladies
is the story of Meg, a young woman in 1958 York, PA, who yearns for more than she can see from her front yard. As she cares for her ailing, wealthy aunt, Meg encounters two exciting and inventive out-of-work Shakespearean actors, Leo and Jack, who are masquerading as her cousins, Maxine and Stephanie, in hopes of inheriting a fortune. Hilarity ensues and love blooms as these characters find themselves in new and crazy situations.
Ayers notes that laughing with the cast non-stop has been a rollicking disruption during rehearsals. “This cast is amazingly talented and truly comic geniuses. Although the play is set in 1958, the hijinks, characters and themes are timeless. We have found a way to allow the perspective of now to influence our view of the past while keeping the classic nature and authentic image of the time period.”
A well-known regional performer and teaching artist herself, as well as a director, Ayers adds that the
Leading Ladies
cast and crew “look forward to rehearsal all day and don’t want to leave when it is over.” She suspects the audiences for
Leading Ladies
will have the very same experience.

. tells the enchanting story of the magical land of Arendelle, and the sisterly love of Princess Elsa and Princess Anna.
Director and Missoula Children’s Theatre Education Director, Matt Loehrke, says it’s the classic story from the first
Frozen
film, and includes songs from both movies and the Broadway version, with all the characters and songs you know and love. “
Disney’s Frozen JR
. takes all of those elements and condenses the performance down to a little over an hour, making it a perfect theatre piece for both our cast and audience.” The cast, he says, is dedicated and hard-working junior and senior high school students “pouring their talents into learning this massive show. Their excitement is infectious, and that energy translates into their singing and acting.”
Loehrke says seeing familiar film characters come to life onstage can be transformative for audience members. “You experience their joys and sorrows in ways you cannot do while watching a movie.” The magic of the royal sisterly bond between Elsa and Anna, along with the adventure and humor supplied by Olaf, Hans, Kristoff, Pabbie, King Agnarr, Queen Iduna, Bulda, and Sven will be a live theatrical experience your entire family will love and relish for years to come.

This February the ZACC is collaborating with Soft Landing Missoula to host a show by three artists who are refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Moses Bushiri, Luc Mugondozi, and Lorenzo Mugondozi. Their work will remain in the Blackfoot Communications Gallery through the month of February, 2020.
Moses Bushiri, 32, arrived in Missoula with his family in June of 2018. His family had been living in the bustling city of Bujumbura Burundi for several years prior to his arrival in Missoula. Art has been something he has brought with him along his journey. His art depicts not only the struggles but also the beauties of where he comes from.
Luc Mugondozi, 23, came to Missoula with two of his brothers in the winter of 2019. He has a love for fashion and textiles and was quick to gather the supplies he needed to continue the art of sewing once he arrived in Missoula. He has made Missoula his home and hopes to blend the styles and textiles from Africa with those of Missoula to create a fresh and creative look.
Lorenzo Mugondozi, 27, came to Missoula via Campala Uganda in the winter of 2019. He has been drawn to the creative world since he was very young and enjoys painting, clothing design, and being a DJ. He hopes that through his art, people can get a glimpse of Africa.

Once a year, just before Valentine’s Day, Turning the Wheel Missoula hosts a donation based card making event, complete with all materials needed to practice the art of appreciation. We will support participants in the art of gratitude expressed through the medium of collage.
To create a Valentine, there is a $5 donation to cover materials. There will also be pre-made Valentine’s cards and pins crafted by local artists available for purchase. The event will take place at the
ZACC on Feb 7, 2020 from 5:00-8:00PM.
TTWM is a non profit organization that offers programs to students, elders and professionals of all ages and abilities in movement arts, somatic practices and embodied education. We are cross disciplinary: one part community engagement, one part health and wellness and one part arts education.

New Montana Historic Preservation
Grant Program is Now Open
The Montana Department of Commerce is now accepting applications for the Montana Historic Preservation Grant Program. The new grant program is designed to support the preservation of historical sites, societies and museums in Mo
ntana.
Passed by the 2019 Montana Legislature and signed by Governor Steve Bullock, the Montana Historic Preservation Grant Program was created to help communities increase economic development, community revitalization and statewide tourism through added investment, job creation, business expansion and local tax-base growth.
With awards of up to $500,000 for each eligible grant recipient, the funding will be used to improve historical sites, historical societies or history museums in Montana. These improvements may include infrastructure repair, building renovations, maintenance, building code issues, security enhancements and fire protection.
Eligible applicants for the program include incorporated nonprofit organizations, incorporated cities or towns, associations, counties and tribal governments.
Historic sites will be considered eligible if it is either a structure or site that is listed on a national, state or local historic registry, a structure or site that contributes to a historic district or a structure that is more than 50 years old with documented historical significance to a Montana community or region.
Grant recipients will be determined by the Montana Legislature during the 2021 legislative session.
Applications are due by February 28, 2020.

Calling all artists! Applications now available for the 2020 Open AIR Artist-in-residence program. Come make your work inspired by a homestead, bio station, wilderness area, state-of-the-art library and many other places unique to Western Montana.
Open AIR is a place-based Artist-in-Residence program that connects artists with culturally, historically and ecologically significant locations through collaborative partnerships in Western Montana.
With innovative opportunities available in places such as remote wilderness areas to historically significant sites closer to town, artists will have the opportunity to draw inspiration from a regional community dedicated to preserving place, environment and the arts.
