The Poppovichs
Presented by Montana Playwrights Network and Downtown Dance Collective
Thursday - Sunday, November 21 - 23
Downtown Dance Collective
|
DDC is very proud to announce a new dark comedy written by Leah Joki. This unique project is sponsored by the Montana Playwrights Network, and features three member theatre companies to present original plays written by Montana Playwrights. The Montana Actors Theatre presented the Vorbit Incident in October and Helena Avenue Theatre will present Plumb Local: A Collection of One Act Plays, later this winter.
LEAH JOKi is an actor, writer and director. She has a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. from the University or Montana. She was the first person from the state of Montana to be accepted to the Juilliard Drama School in NYC. She devoted her life to teaching theater in prison. She is the author of Juilliard to Jail and her one-woman show Prison Boxing was nominated as the Best Solo Performance in Los Angeles and originally appeared as an Artist in Residence Project at the DDC in October of 2013.
We don’t always have a choice of how we die. The Poppovichs explores mortality and inevitability of death while allowing the humor of it to set in and travel with us.
The Poppovichs originated as prompt at the University of Montana in Dr. Randy Bolton’s playwriting class in 2013. Playwright, Ms. Joki shares these insights about her work: “I have always thought that anyone who lives past the age of fifty-years old is on borrowed time. The herd simply starts getting picked off. I started to notice in my own family that the dynamics were always up for grabs and you couldn’t predict the outcomes. Although this is not completely autobiographical, all of these characters are members of my family. All of these incidents happened to them, or someone we knew. I couldn’t have made this %$#& up if I tried.”
Performances are all at 7:30pm, General Admission Seating begins at 7pm November 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 2019. Tickets are $16 in advance and $18 at the door, $2 service fee applied at checkout.

Brimming with some of Shakespeare’s most poetic and beloved language as well as multiple earnest love stories and affecting themes of identity, time, and healing from loss, Twelfth Night more than deserves its recognition as the Bard’s most popular comedy. The play’s title references the end of the Christmas season, which was often celebrated with a temporary suspension of rules and social orders. Masters and servants, wise and foolish, men and women all overturn convention in the course of this warm, witty, wonderful production.
