Bellingham Festival of Music Celebrates 25th Anniversary Season
The Painted Violin Project
|
|
The Bellingham Festival of Music celebrates 25 years of bringing classical music to Whatcom County residents and visitors by merging two of the area’s most beloved segments, music and art, into The Painted Violin Project. Allied Arts of Whatcom County will proudly exhibit these violins in the month of March, with the exhibit’s opening night during the March 2, 2018 Art Walk.
The project was inspired by the essential role the violin plays in the symphony orchestra, with its evocative nature and range of tones. Helping to bring this project to life were luthier G.B. Hembree who donated the violins, and two exceptional local artists, Joy Olney and Maren Larson. Widely recognized for their artistic talents, these fine artists have adorned and otherwise transformed these violins into singular works of art. The violins will be auctioned at the BFM Annual Benefit dinner and Auction, “25 Years - A Classical Love Story” on April 7, 2018 at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
Silver Anniversary Painted Violin Project Exhibit Dates:
Intersection Trio Concert, WWU February 8
Jansen Art Center February 10-17
Allied Arts of Whatcom County March 2-30
Lightcatcher Museum TBA
If unable to attend the Festival’s “25 Years-A Classical Love Story” benefit auction, instructions on how to bid on the violins will be available at all exhibits. The Festival’s 25th Anniversary Season runs from June 30 through July 20, 2018. Concert and benefit auction ticketing information available on the BFM website:
http://bellinghamfestival.org/.
These violins are displayed and auctioned as works of art and not as instruments to be played. Playing these violins could result in damage to the art.

Composition Class with Tommy Gibson
|
|
Saturday February 17, 1pm (class will be approximately 2 hours)
At the Allied Arts Gallery, 1418 Cornwall Ave, Downtown Bellingham
One of the first composition concepts learned in photography is the rule-of-thirds. This gets you started, but there’s more to composition than where you place your subject in the frame. Once you’ve mastered this concept, what else can you do to make images that stand out?
That is exactly what we’ll be exploring in this class – ways you can “see” a good photograph.
You will learn what constitutes a good photograph, which lenses to choose in which situation, and what aperture or shutter speed to use.
In this class I will be sharing examples of compositional techniques. If you’d like your images critiqued, bring them on a thumb drive so we can project them.

Arts & Heritage Day is approaching on
February 7, 2018!
This is an exciting all-day event that brings together artists, supporters, board members, humanities and heritage leaders, cultural professionals and civic leaders to communicate our needs and strengths in building a strong Washington State.
The day is coming together nicely due to the strong partnerships with these participating organizations: Washington State Arts Alliance, Washington State Arts Commission, Washington Historical Society, Washington Museum Association, Humanities WA, Artist Trust and ArtsEd Washington.
Why attend you ask?
- opportunity for advocates to talk with their legislators about
statewide
and local
arts and heritage issues and concerns
- thank them for their support
- share specific stories and highlights from our work in our communities, schools, and venues
- your
presence
along with many other arts and heritage advocates from across the state help legislators know who we are when we talk about the importance of the arts and heritage in our communities.
- with newly elected legislators and the reshuffling of legislating positions, this is a
particularly important
year to join your peers in Olympia.
- and not to be missed lunch time in the Rotunda! Grab your lunch in the cafeteria and head to the Capitol Rotunda for
performances
by the Mid-Columbia Mastersingers of Richland, incoming State Poet Laureate Claudia Castro Luna and Squaxin Island Tribe dancers
If you’re unable to attend but would still like to help, please forward this email to other arts supporters
in your district
. Please have them get in contact with Kelly Hart at kelly@alliedarts.org if they would like to participate in Arts and Heritage Day.

Call to Artists: Anacortes Arts Festival
Emerging Art Exhibition – August 3-5, 2018
|
|
Deadline April 5, 2018
The Anacortes Arts Festival Emerging Art Exhibition was started in 2017 as a new area to the Arts at the Port Fine Art Show. It features work of a small group of invited high school or college age students, each showing 3 – 5 pieces. Students may show either 2D or 3D work, including painting, photography, ceramics, glass, fiber arts, sculpture or mixed media – or a combination of mediums. We are interested in helping students who want a “taste” of being a professional artist – and who have developed a body of work.
Part of the experience of being one of our emerging artists, is that we will treat these young artists as equal participants with their professional peers. This means
- Work in the show will be for sale - we will process all sales
- The Festival will retain a 50% commission (a typical gallery commission)
- The Festival will market this show as part of our Arts at the Port lineup, recognizing individual artists in signage, the guide, website and other promotional materials
- There will be a $500 Emerging Artist Award selected by the Festival Curatorial Team
