Arts Monthly
March 2017
Lets make spring a bit better than winter...
March, when days are getting long,
Let thy growing hours be strong
To set right some wintry wrong.

At the Allied Arts Gallery this month:
Whatcom READS! Art Challenge
& Elevation - The Art of Cascadia
Allied Arts of Whatcom County is excited to be collaborating again with the Whatcom READS! by hosting a community art exhibit inspired by the novel "The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving." Artists read this year's book and created works inspired by their thoughts, emotions and visions they had while reading. Artwork will be on display during the month of March at the Allied Art of Whatcom County's gallery in downtown Bellingham.

In addition to this exhibit, we are thrilled to be able to continue select works from last month's Elevation exhibit. This show features work from some of the area's top photographers displaying works inspired by the Cascadia region.

Applications due April 20, 2017

Allied Arts is now accepting applications for the 38th annual Holiday Festival of the Arts to be held November 17 – December 24, 2017.

This juried festival pursues top quality original arts and crafts and seeks excellence in presentation. Festival proceeds support the visual arts in the region through Allied Arts of Whatcom County’s general and educational programs, community arts events, gallery shows, and artist resources.

The Holiday Festival of the Arts is an indoor, 5 week-long festival featuring 100 artisans from our region. Aside from vendors selling their wares, the festival boasts live music, workshops for children, and artists demonstrating their craft.

We encourage all artists of any level or medium to apply for the Holiday Festival. Applications can be filled out online at www.alliedarts.org or are available in the Allied Arts Gallery at 1418 Cornwall Avenue, Downtown Bellingham.

Call to Artists: Ragfinery’s Cirque du Couture Runway Challenge
Ragfinery, Bellingham’s nucleus of creative textile reuse, announces its much anticipated runway “challenge” and seeks artists to participate. This year’s theme,  Cirque du Couture , offers innovative artists, designers, seamstresses, and other creative types a fantastical inspiration from which to springboard designs. Drawing ideas from the popular Cirque du Soleil performance ensemble, participants are encouraged to create runway-ready creations out of anything they can find at Ragfinery!

The challenge will  open for artist registration on Wednesday, March 1st  for a $20 registration fee. Materials can then be purchased from Ragfinery. There will be a cap of 25 participants, and materials are first come first serve, so early registration is encouraged. Individuals interested in participating can sign up in person at Ragfinery (1421 N. Forest Street, Bellingham) and details about the event can be found at  ragfinery.com .

Entries must be submitted on May 15th  for judging and dress rehearsal. The Runway Show will be held at the Leopold Crystal Ballroom on  Friday, May 19th at 7pm , where participants will model their creations on the red carpet runway. Winners will be announced the night of the show.

Ragfinery is a Bellingham nonprofit organization that diverts unwanted textiles from the waste stream and upcycles them in a training business that provides transitional jobs for low income clients of our partner social service agencies and schools. We collaborate with local artisans and community volunteers to repurpose unwanted garments and textiles into a variety of upcycled goods that showcase the skills and talent of our collective.
