Upcoming Grant Deadlines

1st of the Month August 2025 through May 2026 or until funds are expended:

December 10: Public Art

January 28: Equipment & Facilities Improvement

February 11: Artist Equity

April 22: Artist Growth

All applications are due by 4 pm on the deadline date. No exceptions.

Did you know...Our monthly grants have a month turn around time as long as the grant is submitted by 4 pm on the first of the month

Understanding start dates for grants with monthly deadlines

The following SMAC grant programs have deadlines on the 1st of each month, August through May: Arts in the Schools, Art Study Opportunity for Youth, Quick Support for Artists, and Quick Support for Organizations. (There are no deadlines in June or July, while we close one year and begin a new one.)

For these programs, the earliest date you can start your project (advertising, auditions, purchases, etc.) is a month after the deadline. For example, applications submitted by the January 1 deadline would list a start date of February 1. An application submitted January 2 or later, while still received by SMAC in January, would count for the February 1 deadline and need a start date of March 1. If you are unsure about choosing your start date, please contact us.

Legacy in the Wild poster

Legacy in the Wild

As continuing grassroots efforts to bring attention to all of the good that the “Legacy Fund” (Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund) brings to the State of Minnesota, a new social campaign has been launched.

Legacy in the Wild is a celebration of the ways that the Minnesota Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment has impacted our great state since being passed by the voters of Minnesota back in 2008.

When you spot the Legacy logo, snap a selfie and upload the photo onto social media with the caption of your choice. Be sure to use the hashtag: #mnlegacyinthewild

Looking for arts events to attend? Check out our regional arts calendar!

We are continuing to post both in-person and virtual arts events in our region on our website calendar. If you have events to let us know about, please email the details to info@swmnarts.org! Remember, these don't have to be SMAC grant funded events, just arts events in our 18-county region!

Have something that's not an event, but an arts opportunity, like a RFP or call for local artists? We'll add it to our opportunities posts! Send us those, too!

Please help SMAC welcome our new Cottonwood County Board Member, Michelle Hooker!

Mixed media art of 3 hearts on gold canvas

Michelle Hooker of Windom was voted in as the new Cottonwood County Board member at the end of September. Michelle is a self-taught mixed media artist and likes to dabble in a bit of all things creative! Raised in a family of artists from several disciplines, she believes creative expression is of great importance to us all. Joining the council is a way for her to advocate for the arts and arts education. Since moving to a rural area, she is excited to get more involved in the arts of this region and meeting up with other artists and attending events; she would love to create more opportunities for artists to come together. Michelle dreams of helping to create a collaborative creative space, like a co-op for artist studio spaces. SMAC is excited to work more with you, Michelle!

SMAC is seeking 5 board members! SMAC is seeking community members from three counties and two sovereign nations in our region to serve on our board of directors: Kandiyohi, Meeker, Nobles, Upper Sioux and Lower Sioux

Are you a member of these communities? Are you passionate about arts awareness & funding and where & how those funds are distributed?

Map of the SMAC region with the words Join Us!

The SMAC Board of Directors continually seeks artists, arts administrators, arts teachers, arts volunteers, and arts appreciators to serve on its board and to keep all 20 board positions filled. SMAC encourages and seeks a diverse mix of individuals from across our Southwest Minnesota region, from all communities – including BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color), people with disabilities, and LGBTQIA2S+ individuals – and representing all artistic disciplines - to be present on our board. Board members share their knowledge and expertise in the arts and/or nonprofit management and their ability to grant funds equitably and fairly.

SMAC's Board of Directors currently has two vacant board seats and will have 3 more in January. We are seeking a member from each of these communities listed above to serve.

The Board meets monthly on the 4th Tuesday evening at the SMAC office in Marshall or on Zoom to set policies, make final decisions on grant awards with input from grant review panels, share ideas and information from their representative communities, and to design programs that enable SMAC to best serve our communities.

Other opportunities include serving on several grant panels a year to evaluate applications, attending a yearly board retreat in January, learning opportunities and trainings on Access, Equity, Inclusion & Diversity and more!

To learn more and to fill out an application visit SMAC's Become A Board Member Page. You can also schedule a meeting with our Executive Director, Nicole DeBoer, for further questions.

We need your help! Become a SMAC panelist!

Would you like to help SMAC review and score grant applications?

The SMAC Board of Directors continually seeks panels of artists, arts administrators, arts volunteers, and arts appreciators representing multiple artistic disciplines from throughout the SMAC geographic region and from all our communities including BIPOC, people with disabilities, and LGBTQIA2S+ individuals. Being a grant panelist is a positive way to strengthen your grantwriting skills by understanding the process as a whole. It's also a great way to learn and support what exciting projects are happening in rural SW MN!

Panelists are compensated $75-$125 for a panel (depending on the number of applications reviewed). More details on being a SMAC panelist
