This September, ArtSouth, in partnership with Near Southside artist Jay Wilkinson, hosted a children's art contest to design the Magnolia Monster. More than 100 children submitted designs for a 20-foot tall, 7-man walking puppet that will make its debut at today's ArtsGoggle. We look forward to seeing the larger-than-life of one talented young artist.

ArtSouth is an innovative Near Southside artist residency program offering studio space, a project stipend and public art exhibition space to selected artists. One artist is selected quarterly to serve as the ArtSouth resident artist commission to create a work of temporary public art.
ArtSouth is currently featuring the work of guest artist Angel Fernandez.
"I have been creating imaginary organisms for the past fifteen years. I grew up in Delicias, Chihuahua, and fabrication was an early inspiration. My uncle was a self-taught engineer and I saw him create fantastic machines. Biological organisms, cancer in particular, have become influential in my work. I lost both of my parents to cancer. Their loss eleven years apart, is devastating and is a primary concern; cancer has redirected the meaning of my work. The forms are mysteriously inviting, and yet they threaten and give the viewer pause. Familiar materials make them approachable, while the meaning of the forms makes them repugnant."

Making something out of nothing: A program for young emerging artists that currently reside in a local night shelter. Art is created through items that are discarded or donated. Artists are taught how to upcycle and recycle, so they are always on the look out for items they can transform.

Narrow Passage is a video installation that explores our physical and
spiritual relationships with nature. It stems from the artist's father's courageous battle with emphysema that lasted 10 years of his life and ends on barren field in Dalhart, Texas where: "The Plow that Broke the Plains" was filmed in 1936 by Pare Lorenz.
