A Message from Megan
CAP's Executive Director

In an increasingly digital and virtual world, real-life arts experiences become more and more necessary and valuable. Thankfully, our community is full of them! When you experience the arts live and with other people, you get so many additional benefits that you just don't get when you consume online entertainment.

When you experience art in the real world, you:

  • breathe fresh air
  • move your body
  • meet new people
  • maybe get a snack
  • AND you support our local economy - helping artists and arts workers make a living and inspiring them with your applause and appreciation.

This fall I'm going to go to an arts experience that's new to me - I'm going to step outside my typical comfort zone and do something I don't typically do. I can guarantee I'll be glad I did. What about you? What will you do?

Margaret Kops Kuveke: MKK Murals

Margaret Kops Kuveke, a local muralist also known by her artist name, MKK Murals, received a Strategic Opportunity Stipend (SOS) AND an Artist in Community Grant in 2026.

Margaret says: "I feel grateful to be an artist in Ithaca -- being part of a community supported by CAP connects artists with the resources needed to help materialize their dreams!”

With the SOS grant, Margaret invested in technology that has transformed her design and transfer process, including the purchase of a Meta Quest 3S and a new iPad Pro. The Meta Quest headset has incredible applications in muraling, allowing her to efficiently transfer her digital designs to large-scale walls without the constraints of other traditional methods, such as projectors.

Since receiving the SOS grant, Margaret has painted out-of-state and local murals with the help of this new equipment. This includes the creation of three new murals in downtown Ithaca. In April, she painted The World Around Us on the back of Bookies Sports Bar & Lounge and in May, her mural Our Ithaca went up on the Ithaca Commons Cornell Store with assistance from students at New Roots Charter School.

Her third downtown mural this year, Legend of the Monday Thing on the Community Foundation building, was made possible through the Artist in Community Grant. This community mural was designed and painted in collaboration with the MondayThing Homeschool Collective, aged 10-15.

For insights into Margaret’s creative process, follow along on Instagram - @mkkmurals or check out her portfolio at mkkmurals.com.

Strategic Opportunity Stipends (SOS) offer Tompkins County artists with a consistent recent record of producing art funding for a very specific and strategic opportunity that will take their career to the next level. Funding comes from a local private foundation, CAP fundraising, and the Tompkins Today and Tomorrow Fund & Maralyn W. Fleming Fund of the Community Foundation of Tompkins County.

The Artist in Community Grant supports artists sharing new work in an immersive and impactful way with a local community of their choosing. This grant is part of New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) "Statewide Community Regrant" program and is made possible by NYSCA with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Robert W. Grant

Icons, Legends & Stars

"My exhibition of paintings will tap into the universal appeal of music, the visual power of art, and the cult of celebrity. I depict muses of our modern culture, whose music has provided the soundtracks, dances, and imageries of our lives. I explore the interplay of their race, gender, sexuality, and how their legacy continues to resonate in our modern world. It will be a celebration of the giants on whose shoulders we stand and gaze by.

Yamilka Portorreal

Introspection: Series of Self-Reflections

"This project follows my journey through introspection, with a series of photographs, drawings, and large-scale paintings. Themes of trauma, gender expression, avoidance & escapism are dissected with my body as the unifying thread. This body of work connects inner feelings and behaviors with what is external. With this project, I aim to be vulnerable by taking inventory of my life for the past year by sharing some of my lived experience and inspiring others to be introspective about their own life."

LOCATION: CAP ArtSpace, 110 N. Tioga Street (on the Commons), Tompkins Center for History and Culture in the Ithaca College Gallery
