In the Beatitudes, Jesus taught that ‘blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.’ At the heart of grief is a deep well of emotional responses that can be very difficult to make sense of. There’s no wrong way to grieve, but culturally there’s a tendency to shy away from outward expressions or conversations related to what it means to experience grief. Yet Jesus understand for the people of his day that there was a precarious-ness to one’s mortality. He sought to bring an infinite hope to our finitude. He names a reality and shows that love will prevail.
Within the span of five minutes, Disney Pixar’s 2009 Up opens with an astonishing sequence that details the lifelong love and marriage of Carl and Ellie. It ends with Ellie’s passing and the movie then sets out on a multi-layered adventure story involving Carl seeking to fulfill a dream he and Ellie had. A trip to the mystical Paradise Falls in Venezuela is involved, along with a floating house, a stowaway, and lots of helium.
An overarching theme of the picture is how Carl responds to the grief experienced at the loss of his beloved Ellie. It does so in a way that is both poignant and truthful, aspects that can be tough to convey on the big screen. There is a tendency to shy away from exploring the depths of grief in mass entertainment, but Up takes that risk and succeeds. I believe there are sequences reflective of what Jesus taught in the Beatitudes, an acknowledgement of pain felt and experienced as well as the promise of comfort in love. I look forward to sharing that message of God’s infinite hope in the midst of life’s passages this coming Sunday as we continue our sermon series The Gospel According to Disney.
Peace,
Pastor Jeff
