This Sunday, we’ll wrap up our sermon series on the Summer of Love. We’ll take a look at how God’s love continues to impact our life of faith together.

John 15:12-17 details the final meal Jesus shares with his disciples, where Jesus gives them his ultimate commandment: to love one another. He calls his disciples friends – and that has some pretty deep implications for who we are called to be in this moment of our lives, as we seek to be people who are reflecting God’s grace and love in our world.

What is the deeper implication to being called “friends,” and to live a life of faith that is a living reflection of God’s grace in the world? Listen to Pastor Jeff talk about this and more in his video this week. We hope to see you this Sunday at 9 and 11 am as we finish the Summer of Love!

Help Serve Lunch at Lazarus Ministries: Saturday, July 12

If you're available this Saturday, we still need four people to help serve lunch or assist in the Lazarus Boutique at Lazarus Ministries KC! Come out and help with a wonderful mission opportunity from 9:30 am-1 pm at Linwood United Church, 3151 Olive, KCMO, 64109.

Lunches are served 'restaurant style,' so kitchen volunteers can assist with hosting, greeting, plating, and/or serving. Lazarus Boutique volunteers serve as personal shoppers to guests, assisting people one on one in finding clothing, hygiene items, linens, or other household goods they may need.

Click the black sign up button above to volunteer. Thank you for your help!

We're also collecting money for a "Lunch Love Fund." These donations will go to help pay off school lunch balances for children from low-income households, whose families get behind on payments.

If you would like to contribute monetarily, please make a check out to "Asbury UWF" and write either "School Supplies" or "Lunch Love Fund" in the memo line. Thank you for helping our local students!

Youth Service Trips Fundraiser: 144 Envelopes

The middle school youth head to Omaha on Sunday! Please keep all of us in your prayers.

There's a board with 144 envelopes attached to it on the wall by the west entrance of the Sanctuary, representing amounts ranging from $1-144 ($10,441 in all). If all envelopes are selected, returned, and donations match the amount on each envelope, we will meet our fundraising goals for both of our youth service trips!

Here's how the fundraiser works:

  • You decide the amount you'd like to give to support the youth service trips.
  • Select the corresponding envelope(s). For example, if you want to give $50, select envelope #50. Or you can select envelopes that equal $50 (24 & 26, etc).
  • Fill out the little card inside the envelope.
  • Return the card, your donation, and the envelope to the church (at the front desk, in the offering plate, or drop box outside of the finance office).

Want to choose your own amount? Pick up a blank donation envelope from the counter next to the board, or you can give online via Easy Tithe (select "Other Fund" and type in "Youth Missions Trips"). Thank you for your support!

Travel with Pride More Recap - Thank You for a Wonderful Trip!

Members of Asbury attend the "Do It with Heart" concert on June 28, featuring the Heartland Men's Chorus. Photos by Cherie Wyatt and Reid Samuel.

We “Traveled with Pride More” in June. Our first destination was the KC PrideFest, which took place from June 6-8 at Theis Park. Several Asbury members enjoyed and volunteered at the fest. There was a downpour during the parade on June 7, but nothing could stop people from demonstrating and celebrating the spirit of "All Means All." Although we didn’t have a booth this year, we were a proud sponsor of the event!

We took our Week 2 Trip on June 14 to Gaels Public House & Sports in KC. This was a great opportunity to not only chat over lunch with friends, but also support queer-owned businesses in our neighborhood.

Our trip on June 21 featured the movie “Will & Harper” (2024) in the Parlor. The movie is about a road trip Will Ferrell and his close, long-time friend Harper Steele, who has come out as a trans woman, take together. Reflection time after the movie was meaningful.

We finally wrapped up Travel with Pride More with a trip to the Heartland Men’s Chorus Concert at Johnson County Community College on June 28. Seeing Reid Samuel, our beloved Asbury member, performing was wonderful! It was a joy-filled concert where everyone could reaffirm that we are loved exactly as we are.

As a side note, Heartland Men’s Chorus is asking their community to Give with Heart — and help them amplify the power of music, visibility, and belonging for LGBTQ+ people and allies across the Midwest. If you’d like to donate to the cause, here is Reid’s personal fundraising page. All funds go straight to HMC.

Thank you all for participating in this event co-hosted by Asbury Travel More Project and Words Matter this past month. It was truly a great opportunity to recognize and appreciate the presence and gifts of our queer neighbors. It’s July, but Pride isn’t over!

Our next trip will be our Trip to Greece in September. Open to all ages! Stay updated on all Travel More news by following our Facebook page: click here to link. Or, if you’d like to join the Travel More email list, please talk to Pastor Daekyung or email him at daekyungk@visitasbury.org.

Wills and Trusts Q&A's

Q: I’ve made a decision to leave a gift to the Asbury Endowment Fund upon my death. What do I do now?

A: It’s best to formally declare your intentions through a will or trust. Estates are considered intestate when an individual dies without a valid legal will or trust. In these situations, probate court will decide how assets are distributed, typically favoring surviving spouse first, then to children, extended family, and descendants. If no family exists, the property typically reverts to the state. Any assets of the deceased not assigned a beneficiary most likely will require probate.

A will is a legal document that specifies how a person's assets will be distributed after death. Wills need to go through probate court to oversee the distribution of assets and resolve any disputes. A will may include instructions for decisions after death including: appointment of an executor, naming guardians for minor children, naming heirs and beneficiaries, funeral arrangements, etc.

A trust is a legal arrangement in which a trust creator (grantor) puts assets in a trust account and authorizes a trustee to administer those assets for the trust creator or beneficiaries. Trusts offer several advantages, such as bypassing probate, maintaining privacy, and providing more control over asset distribution. Trusts can be structured to take effect before death, after death, or in case of incapacitation.

At a minimum, everyone should have a will. Beneficiaries and contingent beneficiaries should be named on all eligible assets. Trusts are useful for a variety of situations and professional advice is recommended.
