Dear Asbury Friends,
Last Sunday in worship, I announced that Dr. Diana Butler Bass will be coming to Asbury to speak April 22-24, 2022. She will present a Friday night lecture, a Saturday morning workshop, and will also preach at both of our Sunday morning services.

An internationally-known theologian and writer, Dr. Bass has been offering important insights about what we need to do to offer a faith that is relevant, real, and speaks to the world in which we live. Of course, more information will be shared about this event, but I wanted you to have these dates now so you can mark your calendars!
This Sunday, I will begin a sermon series on Dr. Bass' most recently published book, "Freeing Jesus." This week, we will look at Jesus' use of the term "friend" to help us open ourselves to new ways of being in relationship with him. In a world where we have become isolated from one another because of the pandemic and because of "isms" of all kinds, the importance of knowing Jesus as our friend and exploring friendship with others is very important.
One more opportunity to talk more about this… During the Sunday school hour, I will be teaching a class in Hager Hall on Dr. Bass’s book. Many of you have already purchased the book, but if you don’t have one, they will be available for purchase on Sunday morning in the Welcome Center for $23.
Building relationships and becoming friends… these are the ways we are called to "practice what we preach…"

M&M's - Mission and Ministry Shares
For our M&M's this week (or Mission and Ministry Shares), we want to highlight the important work that is the Lydia Patterson Institute. Below is an article written by our Senior Pastor, Gayla Rapp.

This week, our M&M focus is on Lydia Patterson Institute (LPI). This 100 year old school located in El Paso, Texas, is only eight blocks from the US/Mexico border. Students who attend LPI receive a high-quality Christian education. One third of the students receive financial assistance. Many of the students walk across the border bridge from nearby Juarez, Mexico, to come to school, and a number of them work at the school to help pay for their education. 96% of their students go on to attend college. Our M&M’s provide financial support for LPI, where students are able to receive the life-changing gift of education.

Total amount of M&M's for Asbury UMC: $84,559
Of that amount, $586 is for Lydia Patterson Institute

A Big THANK YOU to Everyone Who Donated Blood!!

Thank you to everyone who donated blood last week for our "Royals Blood Drive" with the Community Blood Center!

Mobile blood drives such as ours account for more than 70% of the blood needed to keep our hospitals adequately supplied. Without Asbury's help, it would be difficult to collect the 580 pints needed each day for our family, friends, and neighbors.
At our Saturday, July 10 blood drive, the Community Blood Center staff registered 24 volunteers and collected 21 units of blood, including ONE first time donor!!

We're so grateful to each and every one of you who helped donate life-saving blood to community members in need. THANK YOU!!!

Rise Against Hunger Event at Asbury
on October 24 - Help Raise Money for Meals!
Asbury's food pantry helps meet the needs of our local neighbors who are hungry. Imagine creating 10,000 meals in one day! That is the goal of the "Rise Against Hunger" event at Asbury. Many of you will remember the energy and sense of fulfillment that you experienced in 2019. This will be similar, except any necessary health protocols will be followed. All ages can participate in the various stages of an assembly line to put rice, seasonings and vitamins into bags that are then sealed and boxed. The boxes will go to hunger spots in the US and abroad. Our 2019 meals went to Madagascar. Please mark your calendar so you don't miss this fun experience!

In addition to the volunteer labor involved, the costs of materials, shipping, etc. are needed. To make this a success, we need donations totaling $3500. That is 35 cents per meal. God has blessed our Asbury family with the resources to rise against hunger. Join me in helping to underwrite this mission to feed God's people. Please contact Phyllis Williams in the church office to make a pledge at 913.432.5573 or phyllisw@visitasbury.org.

3 years - 3rd grade
In-person Sunday at 10 am:
Join us in person at 10 am on the basketball courts. This week's Sunday school is based on the book "What is God Like" by Rachel Held Evans and Matthew Paul Turner.

The book encourages all of us to care for one another, discover ancient imagery, history, love, dedication to what is good, and acceptance of all people. Together, we'll wonder how we're simultaneously insignificant and grand in this vast universe and explore the question: What is God like?

Virtual: Join us as a family anytime and anywhere this week! Ms. Heather will post a video to Facebook on Sunday morning that you can watch together and have discussions as a family.
4th - 5th grade

In-person at 10 am: We will meet at 10 am on the basketball court and continue our series on spiritual practices. This week we'll be discussing silence. Kids should bring a chair.
