Dear Asbury Friends,

On Sunday, June 27, at the 11:00 am worship service, we will be celebrating the ministry of the Reverend Lee Johnson as he transitions from full-time to part-time. We have been making plans to make this a special day to honor Lee’s wonderful ministry with us.

If you would like to contribute to the gift that we will present to Lee that day, please send your donation to the church office by Wednesday, June 23. Checks can be made payable to "Asbury" noting that it is for "Lee’s gift."

One of the things I’ve learned about Lee is that he loves a party! So let’s make this a wonderful party as we celebrate how much we love him and how much he has loved us.

Blessings,
Gayla

Wear Orange for National Gun Violence Awareness Day - June 4, 2021
On January 21, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton, a high school student from the south side of Chicago, marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. One week later, Hadiya was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago. Soon after this tragedy, Hadiya’s childhood friends decided to commemorate her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others.

Wear Orange originated on June 2, 2015 - what would have been Hadiya’s 18th birthday. Now, it is observed nationally on the first Friday in June and the following weekend each year. This year, National Gun Violence Awareness Day will fall on June 4. That will kick off Wear Orange Weekend on June 5-6, which will feature virtual events across the nation, of people coming together to wear orange and demand a change.

How can we participate in Wear Orange? At Asbury, we are going to turn our outdoor lights orange for the weekend. We encourage you to participate by wearing or holding anything orange, like a pin, scarf - or even an orange! - take a selfie, and share it via social media with the hashtag #WearOrange.

One of the most powerful parts of the campaign are the online dedications users post to share why they’re taking part. Examples include: “Today, I will #WearOrange…”
  • “because gun violence in the era of COVID-19 is even more lethal.”
  • “in honor of my beloved son or daughter.”
  • “because I’m a hunter, and I know gun safety saves lives.”
  • “because organizations like [xxx] continue to make a difference and reduce gun violence in my community every day”

Together, we can work to stop gun violence in our communities!

  • Saturday, June 12 at 1:30 pm - Kathy Rogers
  • Saturday, June 19 at 3:00 pm - Richard Chatelain
  • Saturday, June 26 at 11 am - Betty McKelvy

If you can help, please call Lee Johnson at the church office, or you can email him at leej@visitasbury.org. Thank you very much for your help!

Introducing Our Interim Childcare Coordinator!
We are happy to announce the hiring of our interim childcare coordinator: Jessica Moore!

Jessica has been attending Asbury since 2001, and has volunteered with the Asbury Children's Center since 2013. She is currently attending Kansas State University as a Secondary English Education major, focusing primarily on middle and high school students. She is so excited to be filling the role of nursery care coordinator this summer and hopes to see you there!
Nursery Reopening
We are excited to reopen our nursery and help our families get back to church! As we reopen this week, it is important for both our families and our nursery staff to know what to expect so we can provide a fun, safe, and loving environment for all.
We are following the CDC guidelines requiring all children over 2 years of age to wear masks. We are also requiring our nursery staff to wear masks regardless of vaccination status. We will sanitize items and surfaces frequently and there will be no communal craft/crayon bins. Kids will be encouraged to wash their hands frequently for at least 20 seconds and we have removed all plush items from the nursery.

We want to make sure our nursery is adequately staffed, and you can help by letting us know if you will need nursery care here: https://forms.gle/CfhJDvdY3hVSFJog9.

We hope to see you soon!
