Church Council. 6:30 pm in the Welcome Center. All Asbury members welcome.

This Sunday at Asbury, we will gather once again to lift up our voices in prayer and sing in community together. We'll be going back to 1730s England as we begin our next sermon series, "Don't Call Me Methodist: Being a Faithful Witness to a Weary World," and visit the time of John Wesley.

What does 1730s England have to do with our present cultural moment? Well, back then, John Wesley was leading the emerging Methodist movement in engaging in their communities and its people, ministering to the prisoners and the marginalized with the hopes of lifting up those who were experiencing despair in their daily lives. It's a reminder of who we are still called to be today.

Take a listen to Pastor Jeff's video as he talks about this and more of what's happening at Asbury this week. We hope to see you in worship this Sunday at 9 and 11 am!

Church Council Meeting: Monday, November 11 at 6:30 pm

Help Support the Hager Lighting Project by Participating in Our "Noisy Offering" This Sunday!

This Sunday, after each service, Asbury children will be collecting your loose change and dollar bills for a "Noisy Offering" in support of a project to convert Hager Hall to LED lighting.

Did you know that Hager Hall is the largest room in the church that has yet to be converted to LED lighting? Cost savings and better lighting are just a few of the benefits associated with a LED conversion. Total cost of the project is estimated at $7000. Funding for about half of the project has been identified, and that includes a generous gift from the Hager family. We need our congregation's help in funding the remainder!

We will be promoting the Hager Lighting Project through the month of November. Cash and checks are always accepted. There is also an online giving option through Easy Tithe (click here for link). Please note your gift is for the "Hager Lighting Project."

Thank you so much for helping us brighten up Hager Hall!

Banned Book Club: Tuesday, November 12

In support of intellectual freedom, Church and Society invites you to participate in the Banned Book Club. Each time we meet, we'll discuss a frequently challenged book.

On Tuesday, November 12 at 6:30 pm in the Library, join us as we discuss "Let's Talk About It," written by Erica Moen. A copy of the book may be downloaded from Amazon by clicking here. Contact Pastor Jeff Prothro if you have any questions!(JeffP@visitasbury.org)

Come Sing in the Christmas Cantata!

Calling all singers! The Chancel Choir will be presenting its annual Christmas Cantata program during worship on December 8 at both services. If you would like to join the choir, please attend the following rehearsals:

  • November 13, 7-8 pm in the MSR
  • November 20, 7-8 pm in the MSR
  • December 4, 6:30-9 pm in the Sanctuary

The cantata will be a mixture of familiar carols and a few more challenging anthems. Absences from rehearsals are fine, and participants will receive listening aides to help with learning the music. Contact Lindsey Lang (lindseyl@visitasbury.org) with any questions!

Faithful Abundance: Responding to God's Grace

Forty-three percent of Asbury households have submitted their 2025 Estimate of Giving. That is an increase of thirteen points since last week! All estimates are welcomed before the end of November, as it gives church leaders time to assess ministry funding before the New Year.

Please prayerfully consider your response to God’s grace by completing your Estimate of Giving and submitting it to the church office. Forms can be found in the Welcome Center info rack. There is also an online option that can be found by clicking here. Thanks for investing in the life of ministry that is happening at Asbury Church.

Hurricane Relief Cleaning Kits

Your Asbury youth wanted to do something to help the victims of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. We decided the best way to do this is by making UMCOR cleaning kits.

The youth are asking for your help attaining the needed items for the kits through Sunday, November 17. Once items are collected, our youth, kids, and parents will assemble the kits.

There will be a blue barrel in the Welcome Center for non-liquid items, and a table for liquid items. Please look over the list of needed items (click here) and donate what you can!

Monetary donations for youth to purchase items are also accepted. Questions? Contact our Director of Family Ministries, Heather Jackson, at HeatherJ@visitasbury.org. Thanks!

College Care Packages

Did you know that every December and May we send goodies to our college students to encourage them to finish the semester strong? We are inviting you to partner with our Family Ministries in this important outreach to our college students. Partnering with us is simple:

  1. Look at the envelopes on the table in The Welcome Center (they have items & prices on them).
  2. Choose an envelope.
  3. Purchase the item and return the item and envelope to the church, OR you can make a monetary donation that reflects the price on the envelope and return it to the church.

Please return items or monetary donations to the church by Sunday, December 1. Questions? Contact our Director of Family Ministries at HeatherJ@visitasbury.org.

Year-End Tax Giving Strategies

The IRS Standard Deductions for tax year 2024 for each filing status are: 1) Single - $14,600; 2) Married Filing Jointly - $29,200; 3) Married Filing Separately - $14,600; 4) Head of Household - $21,900.

If you are considering making a year-end gift to Asbury or another worthwhile charity, you may want to consider ways to give that are tax efficient. Here are some strategies based on current law:

Bunching charitable contributions. It may be wise to make 2 or more years' worth of charitable contributions this year so you can itemize deductions versus splitting them over multiple years and taking the standard deduction each year. Consider creating a Donor AdvIsed Fund (DAF) through your financial planner or the Kansas Methodist Foundation. We will talk more about DAFs next week.

Donating appreciated assets. If you are itemizing deductions, and you donate an appreciated asset (eg. stocks, bonds, real estate) held for longer than one year to a qualified charity, you may be able to deduct the fair market value of the asset without paying capital gains on a sale, subject to a 30% adjusted gross income (AGI) limitation. The Kansas Methodist Foundation can assist with the transfer of marketable securities to your church or other non-profit.

Making cash contributions. If you are itemizing deductions, remember that up to 60% of your AGI can be deducted for cash contributions made to qualified charities in 2024.

The tax deadline to make donations for 2024 is Tuesday, December 31. If you're donating assets other than cash, it can get a bit more complex, and you'll want to initiate the process even sooner. The information provided is advisory only. Please consult you financial advisor and or tax consultant.

HUGS Collection: November 4 - December 5

There is a snowman in the narthex, and he's very COLD and he wants HUGS.

Will you help him stay warm by bringing him some Hats, Underwear, Gloves, and Socks? Mostly adult sizes are needed. You can hang them on him (like ornaments)! Please note that we are looking for heavy duty men's and women's gloves, not the thin knit ones.

Our snowman will hang out with us through Thursday, December 5. Whatever he gets he will share with our friends at Lazarus Ministries and Cross-Lines, to help others who are in need. If you would rather make a monetary donation, please make a check out to Asbury United Women in Faith and put HUGS on the memo line. Thank you, everyone, for your help in this important ministry!

Eligibility is determined by completing the Leadership Lab curriculum.

This discipleship and leadership program empowers young people to use their gifts both in the church and the world. Youth must be members of Asbury to participate. To register or to discuss the program, contact our Director of Family Ministries.
