Dear Asbury Friends,
While news about the continued spread of COVID-19 disheartens us, we see a glimmer of hope as we hear news about the research being done for a vaccine.  We cannot let this hopeful news damper our vigilance to wear masks, wash our hands and maintain social distance.  Please, Asbury friends, do all that you can to stay safe.
I know that many people are disappointed about Thanksgiving and the fact that they will not be able to spend this holiday the way they usually do.  Sitting together at the table for Thanksgiving dinner is not the only way we can connect with loved ones.  Phone calls, Zoom, FaceTime...these are all ways that we can communicate and connect with the people we love.  Also, it's not too late to send a Thanksgiving card or write a letter to someone letting them know that you love them and that you are thankful for them.
We continue to keep the church closed, out of concern and safety for all people - but ministry continues!  Just a reminder that our amazing United Methodist women are collecting H.U.G.S. - hats, underwear, gloves and socks.  This will be distributed to area agencies helping people in need.  The UMW has also graciously offered to give some of these donations to the Food Pantry Team so that they will be available for people using our 24/7 food pantry.
Thanksgiving calls us to both give to those in need and give thanks to God.  Let's be bold and creative as we do both of these things.  It is the way we "practice what we preach..."

Soup Fest Re-Imagined Update
Thank you to everyone that supported Soup Fest Re-Imagined by donating funds and buying pints of our Signature Broccoli Cheese Soup!  We are pleased to announce that we sold 60 pints of soup, and when combined with the many generous donations we received, we raised nearly $2,200 for our United Methodist Women's mission projects!
THANK YOU, Asbury Community!

CHANGES to Asbury's IHN Host Week
Beginning on Sunday, November 22
As we have experienced many times, and in many ways over these last eight months, circumstances are ever-changing.  That includes IHN!  Because of the high number of COVID cases in our metro area, our current guest, Judy, has been and will continue to stay in a motel; we will not be staffing or providing meals.  No other women or families will be admitted during our week.
Our support church, Leawood United Methodist, has provided the requested Price Chopper gift card for $125, so that Judy can make meal purchases.  Her room is equipped with a refrigerator and microwave.  We will pay $350 for her week's stay at the motel.  Those who have committed to helping with that expense will be contacted in the next few days.
In the meantime, IHN is moving forward with helping guests who have graduated from the network
by providing gift cards for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Chrismons for Christmas!
So, what's a Chrismon, you ask?  Chrismons, meaning "Christ monograms," traditionally are white and gold designs made from Christian symbols that signify Christ.  Often displayed on an evergreen tree during the Christmas season, symbols such as stars, crosses, fish, crowns, and the alpha and omega remind us of Christ's identity, his story, and of the holy Trinity.

We're offering several Chrismons for purchase this year, at a price of $20 each.  This price includes postage and mailing, as we will be sending them out to your homes!  All the proceeds from Chrismon sales will benefit our youth ministry's mission trips and GodSquad.

Check out to see pictures of available Chrismons this year, and to place an online order.  Orders may also be placed by contacting Phyllis Williams at

Each Chrismon has a limited supply, so please indicate your first choice as well as a second choice when you order, in case your first preference isn't available.  The cutoff date for ordering is FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11.  If you have any questions, please contact Char Keith at 913.526.4008.  Thanks so much and have a wonderful holiday!
It's Time to Give H.U.G.S.!!

There will also be an opportunity to drop off your donations during Drive-Through Communion on Sunday, December 6.

This Week's Bible Study from Pastor Lee:
"A Different Kind of Thanksgiving"
Thanksgiving sure is going to look a lot different to us this year.  For some of us, it's hard to maintain a perspective of thankfulness with all the craziness in the world going on.

Pastor Lee talks about thankfulness (and also when we feel the lack of it) in his Bible study this week.  Click on the link below to read more!
