Dear Asbury Friends,
I am so excited to kick off my new journey with y’all finally! Thanks to your prayers, I had a wonderful time with my family and friends in South Korea. My family and I truly appreciate all the love and support you have shown to us. We’re also grateful for the encouraging messages in the cards you’ve sent to my mother-in-law, Gapboon Hwang. Although the journey to recovery doesn’t look easy at all, Gapboon stays strong in faith. She even cooks for herself and works out every day, which we are thankful for. My wife, Jinhee, is going to stay beside her a little longer, and our kids are attending school there. We would appreciate it greatly if you’d continue to pray for Gapboon and for my family and me as we stay apart for a while.

This Sunday, I’ll be preaching my first sermon at Asbury UMC. I’m going to share my understanding and experience of God. There are lots of ways we can describe God.
But, we’ll be focused on the God who is adventurous. The God of adventure has encouraged countless people to leave their comfort zone and start a reckless journey, as we witness in the Bible and in history. And, I bet you also have been taking so many adventures with God.
This adventure has a clear purpose: to be a blessing to others (Gen. 12:3). Let’s talk more about it this Sunday.

Thank you again for your warm welcome. I’m looking forward to working with you to build the kin-dom of God here in our community and the world.

New "Evening Care" Program for Asbury's Friends
with Special Needs

First Gathering will be Thursday, September 16 from 6:30-8:30 pm in Hager Hall

For many years, Asbury hosted the ministry “People Asbury Loves,” affectionately known at PAL. It was a once-a-week respite care ministry for adults with special needs.

Now, once again, Asbury will host a similar ministry called Evening Care. It serves both teens and adults with special needs. Evening Care has a long history, beginning in 1979 at the then-Valley View UMC and continuing on, prior to the COVID shutdown, at Church of the Resurrection-Overland Park. The first Evening Care gathering at Asbury will be Thursday, September 16, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in Hager Hall.

Generally, Evening Care meets weekly on Thursday nights from September to June. Guests are paired with youth and adult volunteers. There will an opportunity for Asbury members to volunteer. Be looking for that information.

Currently, there is a need for games like Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, Trouble, Sorry, Connect 4, and the "Jr" version of Hasbro games (Scrabble, Game of Life, Monopoly, etc). Card games like Uno (multiple sets would be wonderful) as well as decks of regular playing cards are needed, too. Also, many of the guests LOVE puzzles - anywhere from 25-100 pieces are the perfect size. If you volunteer a puzzle, do a quick look through to see that all the pieces are there. To donate, look for the "Evening Care Barrel" in the Asbury greeting area.

This is an exciting opportunity for Asbury to extend its reach of ministry and service well into the community. Please join me in welcoming Evening Care to Asbury!

New Sunday School Class
Starting October 3!

We encourage all of our Asbury members and friends to be involved in worship, service and Sunday school or a small group. It is my experience that people who are involved in these three things get connected and stay connected with their church family.
On Sunday, October 3, at 10:00 am, I’m inviting anybody who’s interested in being part of a new Sunday school class, to meet with me in Room 208.  This will be a time to discuss what this new class might look like… what we might study, service projects we might do, social events we might do, etc.
If you’re interested, or if you have any questions, give me a call at 913.433.4444 or send me an email at I look forward to you joining me on October 3!

It seems like quite some time since we have been able to offer our famed Asbury hospitality to IHN guests—and it has been. But we are gearing up for a great host week beginning on Sunday, October 10!
We are fortunate to have had Leawood United Methodist Church as our strong supporting partner for many, many years. However, they have had to step back from these responsibilities. Fortunately, some of their members, led by Linda Zemke, will continue serving with us in this ministry. IHN will actively seek a new support partner for us but in the meantime, we have volunteers from LUM, Lake Quivira Ministries and Church of the Resurrection to assist us. Still…it will be our members who will be front and center in making this a successful week. There will be sign-up sheets in the Welcome Center beginning this Sunday. Can we count on YOU to help in any of the following ways?

  • *Staffing: Sunday, 10/10-Saturday, 10/16
  • 5:00-7:00—Donetta Shaner, Coordinator (; 913-897-2488)
  • 7:00-9:00—Donetta Shaner, Coordinator
  • Overnight—Linda Stinnett, Coordinator (; 816-868-1052)
  • *Training Required for Staffing - please contact Linda Stinnett for training dates
  • Meals: Sunday, 10/10-Saturday, October 10/16—Libby Schoeni, Coordinator (; 645-9773)
  • Since we will now provide dinner all seven nights, we sure could use some extra cooks!!
  • Laundry: Sunday, 10/17 pick-up and Sunday, 10/24 return—Margie Pryor, Coordinator (; 383-1644)

  • Take-down: Sunday, 10/17, 7:45 a.m.—We need a new coordinator!! Thank you to Kristina and Ryan Ziegler for coordinating these past years.
During the last year and a half, many of us have missed being able to volunteer. This is a prime opportunity to get back into the heart of things!

Celebrate Wonder (3 years old - 3rd Grade)
Celebrate Wonder is a curriculum that seeks to celebrate spirituality through wonder. Children are naturally spiritual beings and everyday theologians. We want children to recognize and name this spirituality found within themselves and in all the world around them.

This curriculum is based on spiritual practices, which are incorporated through play, discovery, biblical exploration, faith conversation, and relationship. Children who participate will come to know and use spiritual practices as a way to deepen their faith and to grow in their spiritual identity as children of God. These spiritual practices then become building blocks for holy moments and enrich the faith lives of each and every child. We hope you will come wonder with us as we celebrate the Spirit of God in the lives of children.
In-person Sunday at 10 am:
Joseph in Egypt (Genesis 39:20-40:23). Our faith word this month is "Reconciliation." We'll start wondering together outside on the basketball courts at 10 am this Sunday. Kids should bring a chair or something to sit on, and a mask in case they need to enter the building.

Join us as a family anytime and anywhere this week as we return to our Celebrate Wonder curriculum and our faith word "Reconciliation." The lesson Joseph in Egypt (Genesis 39:20-40:23) and activities were emailed to parents today. Miss Heather will post a video to Facebook on Sunday.
