We continue with our "Faithful Misfits" sermon series this week with a focus on Hagar. Tucked in the middle of Genesis, Hagar's story is complicated. She is a servant of Abraham and Sarah who becomes involved with their desire to have a child. She dutifully bears a child, but once the child is born, the complicated mix of family dynamics, structure, and expectations eventually cause Hagar and her child to be exiled into the desert.

Hagar's exile as a servant rejected from her family structure is a heartbreaking story. Hagar experiences the fullness of desolation and what it means to be a mother caught between the hard choices of life and death. It's easy to wonder, where is God in that moment, and how will God respond to Hagar's cry? In our own faith lives, how often have we unintentionally participated in being part of a group that has shunned someone else or kicked someone else out for being too outside of what we perceived as normal, or for feeling threatened by them?

As a faithful misfit, we'll look at how God perceives Hagar, and, in turn, how God sees us and is with us. Check out Pastor Jeff's video as he talks more about this and other happenings at Asbury this week. We hope to see you in worship this Sunday at 9 & 11 am!

Join Us in October for Faithful Politics or the Politics of Faith: How to be Politically Engaged Without Losing Our Souls

Our United Methodist Social Principles states, "Our involvement in political systems is rooted in the gospel imperative to love our neighbors, to do justice, and to care for the vulnerable. As United Methodists, we acknowledge that love requires responsible political action and engagement aimed at the betterment of society and the promotion of the common good." How do we do that in a divided political system? How do we remain faithful to our calling as Christians in a context that has an "us vs. them" mentality that seeks to dehumanize opponents, ostracize the marginalized, and encourages discord and fear-based rhetoric?

Join Pastor Jeff on Mondays in October from 6:30–8:00 pm, in person or online, as we discuss ways we can navigate the troubled waters of the political process. We’ll explore a brief history of religious political engagement, dive deep into the United Methodist Social Principles, and seek ways to follow our faith in a time of great division. Click here to sign up today!

Walk for Welcome

“You shall love the sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.”

-Deuteronomy 10:19

In August, I decided that it was time to get moving. My big audacious goal was 10,000 steps a day. I thought this was pretty strong until I met Ryan Hudnall, the Executive Director at Della Lamb. Ryan will be walking across Missouri from the Truman Sports Complex to the St. Louis Gateway Arch in September. To prepare for this sojourn, Ryan is walking nearly 11 miles on training days throughout the KC metro area. That’s roughly 22,000 steps daily!

Della Lamb, located in the Pendleton Heights neighborhood of Kansas City, and in a zip code where 75% of the residents live below poverty level, will celebrate 130 years of service next year. The center grew from the United Methodist Women (United Women of Faith, today) seeing a need to serve the Italian immigrant community arriving in Kansas City. Providing childcare and relocation assistance to new families has remained the consistent mission of Della Lamb.

In 2025, a flurry of executive orders under the new presidential administration seriously impaired the fiscal work of Della Lamb, but not the spirit. As staff and board members gathered in those seemingly dark days, a return to John Wesley and the Methodist way was born.

This September, Ryan will take on a distinctly Wesleyan act of witness: a circuit not by horse, but on foot. According to Ryan, “Like the early circuit riders, this “circuit walk” will carry a message from Town to Town: Missouri can be a place of refuge. The walk in remembrance of the displaced embodies the experience faced by those fleeing persecution. To walk in pursuit of safety… and refuge.”

The Walk to Welcome Purpose:

  1. Bear Witness Publicly
  2. Mobilize the Connection
  3. Sustain Ministry on the Ground
  4. Reignite Methodist Energy for Mission

According to Ryan, “Global displacement is at historic levels. The US Refugee Admissions Program is currently suspended. The dignity of sojourners is on trial in America.” You can learn more about Della Lamb and the Walk to Welcome by visiting Della Lamb's website here: Della Lamb – Inspiring a Kinder Kansas City.
