Meet Our New Nursery Care Attendant - Bette Bell!

Bette is an aspiring elementary school teacher with a background in childcare and Early Childhood Education. Her first job was in her childhood church nursery at 15, and since then, has worked as a Lead Infant Teacher at Heart & Soul Early Christian Learning Center, and Primrose School of Lee’s Summit. Over the last year, she has worked in the Lee’s Summit School District as an Elementary School Resource Aid and Paraprofessional. Bette is passionate about education and working with kids, and is excited for the opportunity to connect with and get to know the families here at Asbury!
Bette enjoys reading and writing poetry, and is an avid photographer in her spare time. She is also a full-time student, and the mother of a sweet little toddler named Ada!
World Communion Sunday is Sunday, October 2!

On October 2, Asbury will join all different Christian denominations around the world to celebrate "World Communion Sunday." This day of observance began in 1933 and has grown into an international day of unity. We will participate in communion together, remembering Jesus's words: "That they may all be one."

The special offering taken on October 2 will provide scholarships and training programs for racial and ethnic students to achieve their educational goals, ultimately giving back to the betterment of their communities. Your generosity helps these students prepare for leadership. The needs exceed what we can fund and your gifts can further growth and success!
Open Table Sunday School Class

The Open Table group is starting a new study and discussion topic this Sunday, September 25: "What's So AMAZING About GRACE?" by Phillip Yancey.

Grace, long-standing and enduring, is a good concept to study and discuss, and to live! And the same for grace - grace not tied to religion.  Can you imagine a life without Grace, or even without grace? Can you recognize Grace, or grace, when it comes into your life?

Sundays at 10 am, Room 208.  Shine a light!

Tuesday, November 8 General Election Information

The November 8 General Election is slightly less than seven (7) weeks away. But there is a very important date less than four (4) weeks away to prepare for this most important event in our democracy. Tuesday, October 18, is the last day to register/re-register to vote on November 8.

You do not need to re-register unless you have moved to a new address, or your name has changed. For new voters, you can register to vote if you are 17 years old and will be 18 by election date. You can register or re-register in one of three (3) ways:
  • In-person at your local county election office
  • Online. Go to
  • By mail
***The deadline for all three (3) options is Tuesday, October 18.

Kansas allows any voter to request a ballot by mail. You can apply to vote by mail (VBM) also at the website. The absolute latest deadline for a VBM ballot is Tuesday, November 1 (though it is not recommended to wait quite this long).

Additional information will be forthcoming as the general election gets closer. Please pass this information on to any Kansas eligible voter. Our democracy needs to be representative of ALL the people. Questions can be directed to Julia Cotter, Asbury Voter to Voter Team Leader.
Do you have an event you would like to be listed on the calendar? Please call the church office or email Phyllis Williams at For inclusions in the Alive Newsletter, please contact Sharlynn Verner at

Acolyte Training
We'll be training kids to participate in this important element of worship - acolyting - in the coming weeks.

Being an acolyte is more than just lighting candles. "Jesus said: ‘I am the light of the world' (John 8:12 NRSV). The presence of the light reminds us of Jesus coming into our world and into our lives. The light is carried into the worship service as a symbol of Jesus coming into the presence of the worshiping community. [...] At the end of the service, the light carried out into the world is a sign that Jesus Christ is for all people everywhere, and that Christ goes with his people into the world where serve as his living body." (

We hope if you have a child in 3rd-8th grade you will encourage them to participate in worship in this meaningful way.
