October 15, 2020

There are few things as divisive as politics. But the question for Jesus followers is this: Are you willing to evaluate your politics through the filter of faith rather than create a version of faith that supports your politics? Jesus didn't call everyone to agree on everything, but he did command his followers to be united by unconditional love.

Join us this Sunday as Pastor Eric begins a new 2-week sermon series, "The Intersection of Religion and Politics".

IN-PERSON WORSHIP: 9 AM IN THE SANCTUARY

October is Pastor Appreciation Month!
Take time during the month of October to say a special "thanks" to our pastors! Send an email, a card of thanksgiving, or another affirmation for their ministry at Asbury. Cards can be sent to the church office.

Advent Study Leaders Needed
Pastor Eric is planning an encouraging Advent study and sermon series around the book Sent, written by Pastor Jorge Acevedo. As we long to hold one another close and grow in our faith as we anticipate celebrating the birth of our Savior, Asbury leaders want to encourage all members to join in a short-term Bible study, but we need facilitators and leaders. Visit asburylv.org/SentLeaders to learn more about how you can be involved for this important faith-building opportunity.

As Christians, God calls us to "mourn with those who mourn" (Romans 12:15), and yet throughout the pandemic many families were unable to hold memorial services or could only include a few close family members at a service. On Saturday, October 24 at 2 PM, Pastor Barbara will hold a "Time of Mourning" Prayer Service outside in the Asbury Memorial Garden.

If you have not been able to mourn or celebrate the life of someone in your circle-a fellow church member or a friend, co-worker or loved one outside of the church, you are welcome to attend. Please come prepared to share the individual's name and if you wish, a few words about them. We pray this service will bring comfort to you.

Please pre-register at asburylv.org/mourning or call the church office to let us know you plan to attend. Face masks and social distancing will be required. If you prefer to sit for the service, please bring your own folding chair.

In case of rain, the service will be held on Sunday, October 25 at 2 PM.

Make your 2021 financial commitment to Asbury's ministries today! Visit asburylv.org/commitmentcard to complete an online form now; or request a physical card from the church office (info@asburylv.org or 610-398-2577).

Update From the Lay Leadership / Nominations Committee
To keep continuity through this challenging time, most members of Asbury's administrative committees have agreed to extend their terms through December 2021. However, there are a few vacancies left to fill on Trustees, Finance & SPRC. If you have suggestions of Asbury members who might have the skills, spiritual gifts, and experience to serve on one of these committees, please submit the names to nominations@asburylv.org. (You may also suggest your own name). All Asbury committees need to be diverse in terms of gender, age & length of membership, so not all suggested names can be nominated. Names must be submitted by October 23. [NOTE: If you have previously said "no" to a nomination, you will not be considered again for a position until you inform the committee of your willingness to serve.]

The Upper Room November/December

Health Tip from Doris Farrar and Asbury's Health Ministry

Wise Words of Wisdom

Progress is coming! Keep safe, but try not to regress. As you well know, your immune system will suffer, depression set in and your equilibrium shot-BAM!

As we move through fall, don't let this happen to you and your loved ones. Take action each day to maintain your health and S-A-N-I-T-Y.

Move forward my friend, slow but sure, and don't be afraid to enjoy moments galore. These positive steps will gain you your health. So don't be afraid to maintain yourself.

Plan each day with time in the sun for Vitamin D, stretch and exercise, eat healthy most of the time, get your Zzzsleep, venture out safely with masks and sanitizers. Work, find hobbies, and do random acts of kindness and MOVE FORWARD! Fear and complacency is our worst enemy.

If you have to go to the hospital, our pastors want to be able to provide spiritual and emotional support.  Please have a family member call the church office, and notify hospital registration that you are a member of Asbury United Methodist Church-our church code is "743."

Asbury's building is currently only open for limited activities. Should you need to gain access to the building, please contact Israel Olivieri, Business Manager, at iolivieri@asburylv.org. The office remains closed, but any phone messages you leave will be answered as soon as possible.
