Help Stop the White Mulberry Takeover of ABC Lakes

Sunday, March 23, 10am - 1 pm

Invasive Plant Removal at ABC Lakes

Sunday, March 23rd, from 10AM-1PM, the Ashburn Village Invasives Removal Team (AVIRT) will be conducting their second invasive plant removal event at Alder, Beech, and Cedar Lakes, and we need you! Unfortunately, these three beautiful lakes, which feature native pollinator gardens along their pathways, are ringed by invasive white mulberry trees.

These white mulberry trees outcompete native mulberries and hybridize with them, threatening our native version with extinction. White mulberries spread through pollen and fruit eaten by birds, with a single tree capable of producing millions of seeds.

Recently, landscaping crews cut nearly 100 white mulberry trees at ABC Lakes down to 12" tall, but without further intervention, they will resprout from these stumps. We have a rare opportunity to finish the job and keep them from coming back.

Come out and meet some new friends, enjoy the weather, and make a difference in our community. The event will be capped at 30 volunteers.

Our wineries, orchards and farms could use your help! After being drawn to Loudoun because of the invasive Tree of Heaven, the also invasive Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) then moves on to grapevines and fruit trees, putting our farms and wineries in jeopardy. Please consider joining 1000 of your fellow Loudouners across 15 locations over two days at the 2025 Scrape for the Grape. The event will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, 10AM-1PM and Saturday April 12, 2025, 10AM-1PM.

Why Participate?

  • Be part of one of Loudoun’s most popular volunteer events in 2025 – 1000 volunteers!
  • 15 locations to pick from, including 8 Wineries, 6 HOAs and Ida Lee Park
  • Create awareness of invasive species while helping our rural economy
  • Family friendly and fun, while getting educated about the SLF!
  • Volunteers receive commemorative t-shirts, scrapers and bandannas
  • 20 wineries participating in a "weekend of gratitude", offering special promotions for volunteers
  • Mom's Apple Pie is back with special SLF shaped cookies for the kids

Ashburn Village is a proud member of the Loudoun Invasive Removal Alliance (LIRA), and is partnering with Visit Loudoun, the Loudoun Wineries and Winegrowers Association, and the Virginia Cooperative Extension to take action at 2025 Scrape for the Grape. We are delighted that Amazon Web Services is sponsoring this year’s event.
