Snakehead fish in Our Lakes

A fisherman recently caught a snakehead fish in Lake Ashburn. Although our lakes are catch and release only, there is an exception in this case. Snakefish should not to be put back alive in the lakes. According to the Virginia Board of Wildlife Resources, snakehead fish are predatory and undesirable exotic species, making it illegal to possess a snake fish in Virginia without a permit. They are also illegal to import. Snakeheads can disrupt natural aquatic systems and may have significant impacts by feeding on and competing with native fishes.

What to do with a caught snakefish?

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources requests that anglers kill any snakefish that they catch.

How to recognize a snakefish?

Thank you.

Friday Shoutouts

Christine says, "Compliment. I would like Ashburn Village to know how impressed we are with the lifeguard staff at the Lakes Pool on Cheltenham Circle. The lifeguard staff are professional and the pool is managed efficiently. This week before the storm the lifeguard staff secured the pool by removing the small umbrellas and closing the large umbrellas, as well as, securing the site. Kudos to the lifeguard staff. It is a big improvement over last year."

Thank You!
