Newsletter Co-Editors
Are You the New Me?

After two years as the A shby Village news-letter editor, I must let go of this happy role. A n editor gets to know many folks during interviews, story writing, and reporting on upcoming events.

Now we're looking for 2-3 co-editors. No need to know anything (you'll learn on the job), but you must be able to meet deadlines, take initiative, enjoy writing, and not be technology phobic.  Email

JULY 2016

Culture of Giving
Donate Locally

I make my donations to Ashby Village because they are local and the money stays here. I like knowing my money goes to the members and the staff, and to help members who can't afford the fee. The staff are so fabulous and so dedicated - I don't know how they manage to do all they do.

Kris went from "working in a competitive,  nasty business"  to volunteering "ferociously" for Ashby Village.  LEARN MORE

Did you guess the Annual Tea for 90 and older?
If so, you're right!

The second annual 90's Tea on Friday May 27, 2016, was once again a hit! Approximately 20 Ashby Village members joined with staff, volunteers, and other members to enjoy each other's company, and celebrate the nonagenerian decade and beyond. You must see the extraordinary pictures taken by Ashby Village photographer Richard Bermack. LEARN MORE

SPOTLIGHT

The Healthier Aging Initiative at Ashby Village is nearing its 1st anniversary.

We hope we have succeeded in
getting  the word out
about how important it is for your mind and body to keep physically active.  This is especially true in our later years when we lose 10 lbs of our muscle mass every decade after age 50.

As we enter our 2nd year, we will make it  even easier for our members to find ways to "get on the move."

This fall watch for our Fitness Handbook describing fitness activities, both at Ashby Village and in the community.

Some of you had the opportunity to attend the workshops we offered this year on Senior Strength Training and Qi Gong. Look for more such  opportunities
as we " get on the move at Ashby Village."

   It's All Good
for the Aging Brain
New evidenc e that physic al activity can forestall the mental decline in aging brains.
NY Times, WELL, 4/7/16 by Gretchen Reynolds

"Even a small  amount of exercise or other physical activity -about 20 minutes of brisk walking a day- can prolong the lives o f sedentary people."

Increasing exercise was associated with reduced mortality rates in people at all activity levels and in all weight categories according to a recent study in theAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutrition of 330,000 Europeans ages 25-70...The biggest reduction in mortality rate would occur when transitioning from being totally inactive to merely moderately inactive. -Wellness Letter, CAL Berkeley, Vol 13, 4/15
