Keeping you informed, involved, and inspired!
In the January issue
reading-challenge
We've just wrapped up last year's challenge in which over 1,300 challenges were submitted by 81 participants. This year's reading challenge categories range from "A book about travel" to "A book that's out of this world" to "A book set on a boat". Although all of these attributes could be ascribed to a single book, each book may only be used to satisfy a single challenge. We think this year's challenges are a good mix between the general (so you can include many of the books you would have read anyway) and the specific (so you have to read some books you never would have chosen on your own). Our library sponsors this challenge for two very important reasons: to promote literacy in our community and have fun doing it. If these goals float your boat, we hope you'll join us on this literary voyage! Visit the 2017 Reading Challenge website or ask a library staff member to get started.
candid-critters
North Carolina's Candid Critters Project

North Carolina's Candid Critters is a citizen-scientist run  camera trap survey of North Carolina.  Help us figure out what mammals are living where in our state to help wildlife conservation and management. Visit the website to learn more about the project and, starting January 16, sign up to be a part of it. Appalachian Regional Libraries will be lending locations for borrowed cameras and will provide project-based programming soon!

jan-closing
Ashe County Public Library will be closed on Monday, January 16 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.
vita
Each year, the library serves as a host site for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). The VITA program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. We will begin taking appointments on January 17. You may call 336-977-5829 to make an appointment!

Author Visit with Lisa Muir

Lisa Muir, author of Taking Down the Moon, will visit the library on January 30. This finely-wrought collection of short stories is inhabited by characters who are at once quirky and compelling. Lisa works as an English instructor at Wilkes Community College. This is her first book.
