Kal Penn says: "Hey everyone. It's Kal Penn, please join me on March 19th at the 5th virtual Tasveer Gala to celebrate 20 years of their service to the South Asian community, through films, art, and storytelling. It's especially nice to partner with an organization like this, that supports multi-dimensional representation of South Asian artists within the South Asian diaspora."

So I will see you there."

Interact Live with Kal Penn, March 19th, 6PM

Kal Penn post _1_.png

Yes, you heard it right, Kal Penn will be joining us LIVE! It will not be a recorded video as many are asking us, and a few lucky ones can even get a chance to ask Kal Penn a question!

He will discuss his book, a national bestseller, 'You Can't Be Serious' at the event this Saturday. In his book, Kal narrates moving accounts of racism in Hollywood and the entertainment industry. Tasveer works to tackle the issue of racism against South Asian Artists, through its storytelling platforms.

The 20th Celebration Gala promises to be a fun-filled, star-studded, interactive live event! Mira Nair (on video) will introduce Kal Penn. Stand-up comic Sonal Aggarwal will entertain us as the emcee throughout the event. Buy your Gala tickets before March 19. A premium ticket includes a signed copy of 'You Can't Be Serious.'

TasveerTV Pick of the week:

Celebrating Women's History Month

FILM: YEH FREEDOM LIFE

Priya Sen, India, 70min, 2019, Documentary, LGBTQI+

TasveerTV pick of the week is "Yeh Freedom Life" directed by filmmaker Priya Sen.

Watch Priya's interview taken during TSAFF 2021 where she talks about meeting and connecting with the protagonists and the insights she gained into their lives, perspectives, and relationships.

Filmed in Delhi, 'Yeh Freedom Life / This Freedom Life' tries to keep up with its protagonists, as they maneuver erratic and unpredictable love. One of them works at a local beauty parlour, the other runs the family’s small cigarette counter at a crowded intersection. They are surrounded by a cacophonous city; they are both in love with other women. The film accompanies them through their desire to live according to them, their ‘freedom lives’, outside society and family’s constant scrutiny and sanction. But this ‘freedom life’ also leaves them vulnerable to the precariousness of love, when it refuses such constraints.

Poetry by Azura Tyabji

Listen to Azura talk about what Tasveer means to young artists like her, before and during the pandemic. Azura also recites her beautiful poem 'Diaspora'.

"Tasveer has been brave enough to reimagine and create, to be a beacon of community when community has been forced to be distant. What art does is give us the power to reimagine our potentials when oppressive structures of this world are dependent on us not."

Azura Tyabji at Tasveer Gala 2021
