MEDICAL STUDENTS:
We Need Your Voice!

The Mississippi Legislature is considering bills right now that would grant Advanced Practice Registered Nurses the ability to practice independently of physicians after they reach a threshold of 3,600 hours of training. We oppose these bills and we are calling on medical students to fight them with us.

House Bill 1303 is expected to be debated on the House floor this week. We ask you to contact your state representative and urge them to vote no on these bills.

Here's an online tool to find out the name of your local representative: OpenStates.org. Simply type in the address where you are registered to vote, and it will display your representative's name.

Once you know who they are, you can find their phone number on the House roster. You can also call the Capitol Switchboard at (601) 359-3770 -- someone will take a message and give it to your representative.

Suggestion for What You Might Say:

I am a medical student in my __ year of school. Please protect my commitment to train to give quality medical care to Mississippians. I am asking you to vote NO on HB 1303.

Suggested Script for Rural Scholars:

I am a medical student in my __ year of school and I am one of the scholars in the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program funded by the legislature since 2007. Please protect my commitment to train to give quality medical care to rural Mississippians. I am asking you to vote NO on HB 1303.

We have created a page on our website that gives you more information about the bills and what MAFP members are doing to stop them. You can also help by using the graphic above on your social media pages!

Please contact Beth Embry or Ashley Thompson with responses or questions.
