August's Tip
Consider a Chat Tab
Embedded chat boxes are the preferred entry point into AskAway as they provide immediate access to chat. But, chat boxes may not always be an option on some library webpages due to space or other limitations. That's where a chat tab can come in.

Here are benefits of the chat tab:
  • it takes up no space on the page itself, instead "floating" above content
  • it stays static on the page as the user scrolls, so AskAway remains visible as they browse
  • when the user clicks to chat, this opens up a new chat window that can be easily resized for a more comfortable chatting experience
  • while chatting in this new window, the user can continue to navigate the website

Tabs should:
  • be placed in the bottom right of the page
  • be prominent enough to be easily identifiable
  • appear clickable (tab movement and color change on mouseover can achieve this)
  • be given a clear label such as "Chat with us"

See example chat tabs at UFV Library and UBC Okanagan Library.

See new documentation for customizing chat tabs in the FAQ "Customize your library's chat tab."

Making changes to the chat tab can sometimes be finicky, so if you have any questions or would like assistance, let us know.
Testing and Support

Take a moment to test new entry points – do they display and work as expected when the service is both online and offline?
