Dear Aspen View Academy Community

At the beginning of this year our middle school teachers brainstormed an idea to create "Houses" among students in grades 6-8. The Houses are essentially teams, each consisting of three homerooms across the grade levels, so that every House has members from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. The teachers from those Homerooms are also members, as are the elective course teachers. The staff and I have fully embraced this idea as a way to inspire school spirit, healthy competition, creativity, and unity across grade levels. Each House has been assigned one of the school colors, and the students were given the chance to submit designs for their House Logo. When the designs were collected the students voted for their favorites. The final student designs will be revealed in the beginning of October.

The Houses also compete against each other to earn points in a wide variety of ways so that every student will have an opportunity to participate and contribute. Houses have earned points in such ways as participation in the Dress of Choice theme, accruing Wolf Bucks in their Homerooms, and challenging each other to a bag toss game during recess. This is just the beginning, and there will be many more fun challenges based on athletics, academics, and citizenship throughout the year. Next month the House challenge will be tied to the fundraising efforts that Mr. Barber announced to support disaster relief in south Texas.

At the end of each month the House with the most points earns a House Reward. For this month the winning House (and their teachers) will receive a donut party before school. This party will take place on Thursday, October 5, from 7:15 to 7:45. The winning House for this month will be declared during Homeroom at the beginning of that week.

Aspen View Academy is dedicated to providing young scholars with an engaging and welcoming school environment, which is an essential foundation for the quality education they receive. I am grateful to the teachers for developing this idea. The House teams and competitions will add an additional element of fun, unity, and challenge to our middle school culture. It will also give our elementary students something exciting to look forward to as they progress toward the 6th grade. I would like to thank the businesses in our community who have donated toward our House Rewards including Freddy's, Rocket Fizz, MOD Pizza, MAD Greens, and The Donut House.

Thank you for your support as we continue to have a fantastic school year.

Announcements
Student photos have been uploaded to your parent portal.  Even if you didn't order pictures, all students who were present were photographed.  Please be sure to check to make sure it is the correct photo.  This is the photo that will be in the yearbook, so it is very important that you check.  If the picture is not correct, please email Donia Garcia.
Reminder
School starts at 8:15 for elementary students.  This means students should be in their seats by 8:15.  We have had several elementary students coming in late every day.  Thank you for your support to ensure students maximize use of class time and learn to be punctual.

Middle school tardies have been minimal.  Woo Hoo, Middle School!!

Kinder and 1st Parents, please check your child's Thursday folder this afternoon for a bright orange paper titled Singapore Math in Focus Online Resources. Post this important log-in information near your homework station so that you can access Parent Support Videos, Virtual Manipulatives, and online copies of the Student Textbook and Workbook throughout the year!

2nd - 5th Grade Parents, please look for your child's Singapore Math in Focus Online Resources log-in information, a bright pink paper, stapled in the front of your student's planner. We are confident that these resources (Parent Support Videos, Virtual Manipulatives, and online copies of the Student Textbook and Workbook) will be useful to you throughout the year.

We are pleased to announce our partnership with the Schoolpool program to assist parents that are interested in carpooling, walking, or biking to and from school with other AVA families. Schoolpool is sponsored by Way to Go, a program of the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG).

The program works as follows:
  1. We will submit our family list to Way to Go to be imported into their secure mapping website.  It will include parent and student names, grades, addresses, phone numbers and emails to be shared with other AVA families.  Essentially, this is the same information provided in our student directory.
  2. Parents will receive an email from Way to Go informing you of the closest AVA families.  If you don't have an email address, the information will be sent via U.S. Mail.
  3. Through a secure website, you can add comments to your account (i.e., can provide morning rides, student is in after school activities, carpool is full, etc.), search other addresses (i.e., second household, grandparents, etc.) and elect to share your information with families at other schools.

Note:
  • Your information will only be shared with AVA families; Way to Go will not sell it to other businesses, agencies, or third parties. Likewise, we ask you to treat the information with privacy.
  • There is no obligation to participate.  The information is a great resource to meet nearby AVA families for other reasons such as temporary transportation needs, play dates, baby sitters, summer BBQs, etc.
  • If you are interested in connecting with other families, you will need to take the initiative to contact families to determine interest and make arrangements.
  • Add [email protected] to your address book or safe sender list to ensure your information is delivered to your inbox.
  • Aspen View Academy and Way to Go assume no responsibility, but provide information for your use.  Way to Go does not run background checks, confirm valid drivers' licenses, or assess insurance coverage on participants.  You are advised to screen participants to your personal satisfaction and check your own insurance coverage for carpooling to assure you are covered under these voluntary arrangements.  No drivers, vehicles, or insurance are provided.  Questions can be directed to Way to Go at 303-458-7665 or [email protected].
If you DO NOT want your information shared with Way to Go, please click here for the OPT OUT form by October 13th.

Please only fill out the form if you wish to refuse participation in Way to Go's Schoolpool program, otherwise you will automatically be placed on the list.
