Facilities at Asphalt Green on North End Avenue include a 25-yard swimming pool.

The Asphalt Green community center (located at 212 North End Avenue) is offering up to 200 free memberships to seniors who live in Battery Park City. At the October 4 meeting of the Battery Park City Committee of Community Board 1 (CB1), Karen Borsari, Asphalt Green’s senior director of external engagement, said, “we are inviting Battery Park City residents, aged 65 and up, to apply now through the end of the year.”

She added that while the free memberships will be limited to using the facility between 8am and 3pm, seniors will have full use of the pool, fitness center, and other amenities. “In addition to the regular slate of exercise classes,” she said, “we also just launched ten new senior-exclusive classes.”

An equivalent daytime membership would ordinarily cost $105 per month, plus a $99 initiation fee. “We are offering this opportunity only to Battery Park City seniors now through November 27,” Ms. Borsari said. “After that we will open to all seniors living in Community Board 1, through the end of the year.”

“When we offered free senior memberships in the past,” she noted, “it was based on a lottery. This year, it’s on a first-come, first-served basis. So, if you fill out the application and complete the paperwork, you are in.”

Facilities at the 52,000-square-foot North End Avenue campus include a 25-yard pool drenched in natural light, basketball courts, and a fully equipped fitness center.

Toxic Motes, Too Many Rodents, Not Enough Trees

Environmental Indicators Paint an Unwholesome Portrait of Lower Manhattan

Two clusters of Lower Manhattan neighborhoods rank among the worst in the five boroughs for various environmental hazards and risk factors, according to data compiled by the administration of Mayor Eric Adams. The City’s online Environment and Health Data Portal groups Battery Park City, the Financial District, Greenwich South, the Civic Center, and the South Street Seaport into “Lower Manhattan,” while Tribeca is part of “Greenwich Village-SoHo.” While these communities are ranked favorably according to many of the metrics tracked in the Data Portal, both are affected by harmful environmental conditions. ‘Our Little Gem of a Park’

Small Tribeca Green Space May Get a Bit Greener and Less Small

Tribeca’s Duane Park, a treasured oasis of greenery situated in a triangle formed by Hudson Street and two branches of Duane Street, may be in line for an expansion and restoration. Friends of Duane Park, a local advocacy group founded in the 1990s, is leading a campaign to return the park to its roots by undoing decades of “improvements” that whittled away at the perimeter of the space.
