Patient Safety Tip
Sterile Instrument Integrity
| |
Why: Surgical instrument spotting, staining, and corrosion are serious problems in many health care facilities.
Content: Spotting, staining, and corrosion of surgical instruments can impair their function. For example, a hemostat may not open because of corrosion in the box area, scissors and scalpels could become dull, and instruments could break during surgery as a result of severe corrosion. Spotting, staining, and corrosion also interfere with sterilization. Spores can be protected from destruction by the layers of iron oxide (rust). Corrosion can result in a shortened instrument life, which results in increased cost.
Call to Action: Inspect all sterile instruments before use. It’s an important preventive way to make sure instruments are safe for use. If there are any signs of pitting, staining, corrosion, rust, chips, or dents, dullness, etc., do not use it. Pull it from use and contact your central sterilization department.

Chuck Lamb Wins Sunflower Award | |
Congratulations to Chuck Lamb, Greeter at Aspirus Doctors Clinic. Chuck is our latest Aspirus Riverview Sunflower Award winner. Chuck was nominated by a co-worker, who wrote:
Chuck Lamb exemplifies our Aspirus values every day. Every patient is greeted warmly, and he anticipates their needs, including walking patients to their cars on rainy days and holding an umbrella, and recognizing patients who need a wheelchair and meeting them in their parking spot before they've even turned off their car. Between patients, he goes through the parking lot to pick up any trash, and in the winter continually clears the walks and lends an arm for patients to get to their cars. He has also been the first person on the scene when we've had medical emergencies in the parking lot, gets help, and then monitors the traffic. Not only do our staff recognize the impact that Chuck has on our practice, but the community has as well. Recently, on the Positively Wisconsin Rapids Facebook page, someone posted: "Let’s talk about Chuck. Chuck is usually the first person to greet you if you come to Aspirus Doctors Clinic on Peach Street. He is the guy helping others – and I mean – ALWAYS. Need directions? How about help with a wheelchair? Or a nice smile and a friendly comment about the weather. That's Chuck! We usually travel with our own wheelchair, and I was unsure how to drop off my daughter and get a wheelchair at the same time. So, I parked in the parking lot and went into Aspirus to grab one – nope. Chuck took the chair all the way out to our car and wheeled the patient in. All the while, he was so pleasant and friendly! You may have seen him, maybe nodded hello on your way in. Now you can say to yourself, 'Hey – that's that friendly Chuck guy!'" Comments on the post included statements like, "He is the best, he is so friendly, awesome, kind, helpful, always smiling, makes my kids feel happy, always tells a joke and takes the time to chat." Chuck goes above and beyond to make sure our patients have a great experience in the clinic, and that they are safe getting to and from their appointments. He is an asset to our organization and very deserving of the Sunflower Award.
