SE-SW Newsletter Header

Because we love, we lead.

Every day, we show compassion for our patients, their loved ones, and one another. Below are a few recent examples from our intranet's Recognition Wall. To recognize a co-worker or view more staff recognitions, click here.

Amy Murray, Floor Care Specialist, Environmental Services, Aspirus Riverview Hospital

Housekeeping is short staffed at this time, but Amy was so kind to stop by the registration office to empty our trash. She stopped her floor cleaning process and took the time to empty trash, fill toliet paper, and give us more paper towel. She asked if there was anything else we needed. Thank you!

Gavin Jennings, Nutrition & Food Services Assistant, Nutritional Services, Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital

Gavin found a personal item a patient left on their food tray after their evening meal. He documented the room number and left the item for management to return the next morning. Thank you, Gavin. The patient was very grateful to have her cross returned.

Patricia Check, Registered Nurse, Aspirus Plover Clinic-Vern Holmes Drive

Kudos to Patty for helping in the triage department and assisting with calling patients from Dr. Nash’s panel who need their medication refills addressed.

Holly Woodford Schiller, Registered Nurse, Emergency, Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital

Holly ~ WOW! What a day you had in triage yesterday! You did an outstanding job in triaging so many patients. Your communication was right on point, and the help you provided to a very busy department was tremendous. You are a top-notch ED RN, and I am so happy you were out there yesterday!

May Oligney, Supervisor of House, Nursing Administration, Aspirus Riverview Hospital

Thank you for bringing in balloons for a patient. You made him so happy; and making balloon animals helps with his range of motion. You were so compassionate and brought him so much joy. Thank you.

Mary Elliott, Medical Receptionist, Aspirus Plover Clinic-Vern Holmes Drive

Shoutout to Mary for having the FORESIGHT to ensure hand sanitizers are in the specialty space for patient access.

Tamara North, Occupational Therapist, Aspirus Plover Clinic-Plover Road

My experience was above average. I went into this appointment not knowing what an occupational therapist role would be, but quickly learned she was very knowledgeable and very helpful. Thank you.

Clare Cullen, Nurse Practitioner & Team, Aspirus Stevens Point Clinic-Hoover Road

From reservation desk to lab and ultimately my visit, Clare Cullen and support staff was completely flawless. Most importantly, the review and proactive medical assessment by Clare was excellent. So happy she is there for me!

Kristine Metz, Nurse Practitioner, Aspirus Plover Clinic-Plover Road

I would highly recommend Kris as an excellent nurse practitioner. Very personable, thorough, and knowledgeable. She listened and attempted every process to make sure my concerns were addressed and left me feeling my chest pains were not heart-related, simply muscle strain. I will definitely ask for her for any future medical aid and would like her listed on my charts as my preferred provider. THANK YOU, KRIS, for your excellent bedside manner/care.

Anneliese Bessette, Nurse Practitioner, Aspirus Plover Clinic-Plover Road

The whole building is full of friendly helpful people. My Anneliese is beautiful inside and out. She quite literally saved my life. You can get almost all of your tests, etc., right there onsite. Couldn't be more convenient.

Katie Omernik, Nurse Practitioner, Aspirus Doctors Clinic

Katie is excellent! She listens and takes her time with her patients. Good follow through and great personality!! Great job, Katie!

Dr. Chet Price & Team, Aspirus Nekoosa Clinic

It was a very enjoyable experience from the doctor, to the receptionist, to the nurse Jessica. I felt totally listened to and helped, and that they really cared.

Patient Safety Tip

Why: Joint Commission requires that we follow National Fire Protection Agency requirements.

Content: Cloth light covers cannot be used, as they have been identified as a fire hazard. They cover a light that can start on fire, causing the cloth to drop to the ground and activate the fire sprinkler system. They also can be an obstruction to our sprinkler systems. All fire-suppression sprinklers must be unimpeded.

Call to Action: Remove all cloth light coverings within your department. Speak with your facilities department for a different option if they were placed to prevent light-induced migraines.

Recognizing Our Quality Professionals

October 15-21 is Healthcare Quality Week, a time to celebrate the work of the employees in our quality departments.

Healthcare quality improvement professionals work to improve patient care, patient safety and patient outcomes. They also work to make policy and process improvements that promote health care at the highest level. Responsibilities include decreasing healthcare-acquired infections (HAI), working to improve policies and procedures throughout the health care organization, and overseeing programs that focus on operational efficiency and consistency.

Our Southwest Division Quality team includes (from left): Julie Pisula, Quality Improvement Coordinator; Vicki Peshek, Director-Quality Improvement; Brooke Binder, Clinical Risk Manager & Patient Safety Partner; and Katie Schneider, Supervisor-Patient Experience.

Our Southeast Division Quality team is comprised of (from left) Rhody Przekurat, Supervisor-Patient Experience; Stephanie Taylor, Quality Improvement Coordinator; Amanda Walloch, Director-Quality Improvement; and Amber Garner, Infection Preventionist.

With Aspirus, there are several roles that make up the quality departments at our Stevens Point, Plover and Riverview hospitals:

  • Our infection preventionists work on decreasing healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs).
  • Our quality improvement coordinators, managers, and directors work on many quality of care initiatives throughout the business units and system. These professionals work on quality initiatives by: participating in process improvement teams; auditing charts for program improvements and increased high quality outcomes; submitting quality data to outside agencies to meet regulatory requirements; and coordinating regulatory and accreditation compliance activities (like Joint Commission survey activities).
  • Our patient experience supervisors help monitor our patient experience surveys and patient complaints.
  • Our risk manager is accountable for operationalizing strategies to reduce risk and improve patient safety.

Ashley Gaye Honored for Good Catch

Kudos to Ashley Gaye, Laboratory Assistantwinner of our most recent Aspirus Plover Hospital & Clinic Good Catch Award.

Ashley caught an unlabeled pathology specimen. She was able to work with the surgery center to identify which patient it came from, as it was considered an "irretrievable specimen."

The Good Catch Award is based upon a commitment to High Reliability Principles for Safety to bring awareness to situations when an employee's or physician's actions prevented harm to those we care for.

Patient Thanks ER Team for Lifesaving Care

I just wanted to thank the care team that saved my life in the ER when I was having my heart attack. I didn't realize I was that bad off.

I quit all my vices now. I live to tell everyone that there comes a time when the party is over. At least I'm alive. With a pacemaker, but alive. Thank you.

Patient Shares Gratitude for Entire Care Team

A grateful patient recently sent the following message to Vicki Peshek, Director of Quality Improvement. Vicki had rounded on the patient while they were an inpatient at Aspirus Riverview Hospital.

Hi Vicki,

I am so glad to be feeling better and be back home. I am grateful for each and every employee I came in contact with during my stay... I want to commend and thank every person I came in contact with... You all go that extra mile, push through, going above and beyond, day in and day out.

The ER check-in staff, doctors, nurses, and everyone in between... The CT crew that day, the hospital admitting doctor, blood collector, and anyone I have missed.

Then to my hospital room. The nurses, aides, CNAs, student nurses, and student doctors, the doctors, blood collector, laundry and custodian, the x-ray people, dietitian, the people who place food orders, the food makers, and putting all the items on your meal tray, the food delivery people who bring your food and come back for your tray, and for those who I cannot remember your title.

I am so very grateful for each and every one of you! Each one of you has a gift/ talent that you are using to help other people who so desperately are in need of your care. You all are deserving of a special award. Wish I could give each person I encountered an award, bonus, or whatever it is, that gives you happiness. I can offer my biggest THANK YOU. Pat yourselves on a job well done! Your work doesn't go unnoticed! I appreciate YOU!

With gratefulness...
