AMTA’s proposed position statement on Abdominopelvic pain
The Assembly of Delegates met at the AMTA National Convention to discuss and
vote whether a proposed position statement on Abdominopelvic Pain (AP) should be researched further and created by AMTA.
Abdominopelvic pain is very common. Research shows that the rate of prevalence of AP pain matches that of asthma and low back pain. Therefore, AP pain is likely already appearing on massage therapists’ tables, but MT’s do not generally receive much entry level education on this type of pain, and it is unknown how many pursue continuing education. In addition, MT’s may not know to whom to refer a client. AP pain (and the pelvic floor) is, however, being mentioned and discussed in more common spaces, in in Peloton classes. It is time for Massage Therapists to engage in the conversion and be a part of the solution.
Through creating a position statement around AP pain, the AMTA could raise awareness of this kind of pain, which can open the door to further discussion. This position statement would support the profession as a whole, through integration with other healthcare professionals (like naturopaths, DO’s, pelvic floor PT’s, gynecologists, urologists and urogynecologists), as well as creating opportunities for AMTA to work more closely with other healthcare organizations..
This position statement would support the membership with a well-researched dashboard of data that members can use to deepen their practice. MT’s can become part of the conversation with clients, can develop appropriate networks, and even become part of the solution with further continuing education.
This position statement would support the public by providing a new source of providers (MT’s) that can help improve AP pain.
After lengthy discussion on this proposed position statement the Assembly of Delegates voted in favor of moving it forward. This proposal will now go the the Assembly of Delegates Advisory Committee (AODAC)for further review and research.
