Assessment and Certification Operations

The College plans to resume on-ground and distance learning (DL) Assessment Center operations (with the exception of South Campus) on Monday, March 23, 2020. Due to the current CDC individual room capacity guidelines and social distancing limitations, our overall testing capacity is greatly diminished. I will discuss this more in a moment.

Beginning Friday, March 20, 2020 at 2:00 p.m., the on-ground and DL examination scheduling systems will be back on-line and accessible by students. Over the next couple of weeks, the majority of available seating in our on-campus Assessment Centers will be committed to on-ground faculty testing, along with limited seating committed to placement examinations. It is very likely that immediate demand will surpass our capacity, so we will work with faculty on an individual basis to “triage” requests through the next two weeks. Your flexibility is appreciated.

Faculty members teaching on-ground classes who desire to have an examination administered in our Campus Assessment Centers should download and complete the On-Ground Contingency Testing form located in the Classroom area of myFSCJ. Only one form is necessary for your class, and a roster can be attached to the form. This link and the associated form should be active by 2:00 p.m. on March 20, 2020. You can also download the document by clicking here .

Next, the faculty member should email the completed  On-Ground Contingency Testing  form, along with all attachments, to the campus Assessment and Certification center where the class is being offered. Please allow one (1) business day for the form to be processed.

Once the form is processed, the faculty member will receive an email from the appropriate Assessment and Certification Center, informing you that your students are ready to schedule their examination. The students can schedule their examination at  www.fscj.edu/assessment  by clicking on the  "Make a Testing Appointment"  button. The students can test at any of our testing centers.

For online and hybrid courses, beginning Friday, March 20, 2020 at 2:00 p.m., your students will be able to schedule their examination through the SmarterProctoring link in Canvas as normal. However, please understand that we are adjusting our schedule based upon the CDC and federal requirements to only have a maximum of ten (10) occupants in a room per two-hour testing block. Please keep in mind that for the next two weeks, seating capacity for Distance Learning assessments will be greatly diminished.

Exciting Update

The College is moving forward with securing and deploying an automated online examination proctoring service, with a targeted launch of March 30, 2020. Expect to hear more about this service, as well as opportunities to attend training, in the coming week or two. Once the automated proctoring service is deployed, it will pick up the bulk of online, hybrid, and on-ground testing moving forward. Again, expect to see and hear a great deal more about this exciting technology.

Once the automated proctoring service is in place, DL and Assessment center staff will administer only paper-based examinations. Throughout the process, we will be closely monitoring demand and seating availability in all assessment centers and DL testing spaces.

How you can help

If you choose to utilize automated proctored testing, we request that you limit the number of proctored examinations to no more than two per class. The College has made the decision to pick up the costs of these examinations for our students. We will be charged $5 per automated proctoring assessment session, so the cost can mount up quickly. If you are using a paper-based examination, we request—if at all possible—please shift that assessment to a computer-based assessment that can be administered in CANVAS using the automated proctoring technology. Please keep in mind ground-based Assessment Center seating is extremely limited.

Expect to see and hear more in the coming days.

Together we can!
Sincerely,
Dr. Rich Turner
