FEDERAL SUPPORT FOR YOU

Many of you are facing devastating losses. We want you to know that there is federal assistance available to help you get through this disaster.

For personal losses, you can apply for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The website reports that even if you have personal insurance, you can apply for assistance. You should make sure that you can and do repay any federal assistance that is later covered by insurance payments.

If your business has been impacted, you can apply for low-interest loans from the Small Business Administration. If your units have been destroyed or made uninhabitable, you need to return pro-rated January rents immediately, and refund security deposits within 21 days of the date your tenants evacuated. SBA loans can help you find the cashflow to make these payments.

LET'S HELP PASADENA

Ten members of Pasadena Housing Providers met on Friday to put together an action plan to open up housing to displaced residents.

Following Measure H, many people in Pasadena have decided to leave their ADUs, duplexes, and unused condos vacant instead of taking the risk of having to paying up to $38,000 to move back into their own properties. This means that there are many unused homes available for displaced residents if only we can take away this risk to owners who may want or need to reclaim their own property.

Fortunately, Measure H already contains a section that allows temporary tenancies for a limited number of single-family homes. We are asking the City of Pasadena to use its emergency powers to grant a temporary extension of this provision to allow all vacant units to be offered to fire victims for 12 months.

This is not an attempt to overthrow Measure H by stealth. Pasadena Housing Providers has stated that we only seek to adjust Pasadena's rental governance through a ballot measure.

We have spoken with a number of City Council members and we look forward to working with them to find safe homes for displaced people in Pasadena.

We hope to see our proposal on the agenda for the special emergency meeting of the City Council on Monday, January 13th.

If you can, please dial in to this special online-only meeting to emphasize that Pasadena's property owners can work together to find accommodation for our neighbors. You may also email your public comment.

HELPING OTHER VICTIMS

Our friends at AAGLA (Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles) represent property owners across our region. They have put together a great list of ways we can help those less fortunate than ourselves during this time.

We thank AAGLA for making this article open to non-members as well as members.

DOING THE RIGHT THING

Pasadena Housing Providers reminds all property owners that price gouging is banned under California’s laws and that it is both illegal and immoral.

During this unprecedented crisis, Pasadena Housing Providers calls on property owners with vacant apartments, empty ADUs and other accommodations to work with the City of Pasadena to make homes available to our displaced neighbors at a reasonable price.
