Assistance League of Hawaii's 2021–2022 Board of Directors were confirmed and sworn in at our Regular Meeting on May 12. |

This certainly was quite a year. I am sure you join me in waving goodbye as things are getting somewhat back in order.
First of all, I want to thank those elected and appointed Board members leaving their positions this year (Elected): Helen Taufa’asau, Cathy Young, Bonnie Trustin, Gerri Migita and Carol Jones; (Appointed): Miho Teipel and Jane Winslow. These members all shared in the “creative” approach to operations during this last year and the pandemic. Thank you!
For the newest members of our Board: (Elected) Paula Allen, Linda McColgan, Miho Teipel, Cathy Kissel, Gloria McGehee-Koel and (appointed) Hazel Sumile – Thank you for taking on an important role in leading our chapter for this next year. You will have lots of support and plenty of help in completing your duties.
Lastly, at the end of each year we try to recognize those exceptional members that prevailed and diligently performed many different tasks to keep our operation going during this trying year.
Awardees were selected by members who have received the specific award in the past. Ada Edwards Laughlin worked behind the scenes, without fanfare, to help Anne Banning, the founder of Assistance League, further the goals of the organization. This award is named for a member who works quietly in the background.
This year’s awardee is Andrea Cyriacks. As you may well know, Andrea works diligently upstairs at least twice a week, has volunteered as our Assistant Treasurer, is shadowing Nancy Sparacino to become our Treasurer next year, Co-chairs Operation School Bell, helps keep records for our Community newsletter donations and spreadsheets for hospitality. Many thanks to Andrea!
The Martha Taylor Frensley Award was established in 1997 to honor Marti Frensley for her “abounding service” to Assistance League of Hawaii. While difficult to narrow down the choices because so many of our members join daily in service to our chapter, the prior recipients wanted to recognize two members this year: Shirley Rebello and Nancy Sparacino.
If you are looking for Shirley, she can be found in the back corner measuring and pricing our linens. She works tirelessly with a smile. Nancy on the other hand is everywhere! Where would be without her? She is a combination of the energizer bunny and “been there, done that” experience and advice!
Thanks to all three ladies for their service to Assistance League of Hawaii.

Happy 100th Birthday!
Assistance League of Hawaii is truly blessed to have Louise Frye as one of our longtime members. She ushered in her 100th birthday at our May 12 Regular Meeting held at the Outrigger Canoe Club.

We are launching into our new fiscal year in good financial shape. If you haven’t yet renewed your membership in Assistance League of Hawaii for the 2021-2022 year, you can send in a check for $70 to Assistance League of Hawaii / 1505 Young Street / Honolulu, HI 96826 / Attention: Treasurer. It’s not too late!
A big mahalo to last year’s Assistant Treasurers, Andrea Cyriacks, Margie Van Swearingen and Ellen Wilson. They have all made my job much easier.

Just a friendly reminder: The national organization of Assistance League is requiring all member volunteers who access the members section of our website to update their passwords. National has implemented this mandatory change. When you first login into the member section of the website, you will be prompted to create a new, strong password.
Your strong password must include a string of UPPER and lower case letters in addition to numerals and special characters such as # $ @ &.
Once you do this, on subsequent visits, you can use your new, complex password for future logins.
I’d like to thank our Marketing committee member volunteers for helping out this past spring with our ACTION WEEK! virtual presentation.
Linda McColgan will be the new marketing director starting in June. Here’s wishing her and the committee the best of luck going forward.

We Can Use Your Help This Summer |

As Assistance League of Hawaii's financial year comes to a close we should give ourselves a “collective pat-on-the-back” for having a successful year in spite of so many difficulties.
The Thrift Shop had to deal with COVID-19, quarantines, masks, long lines, distancing, sanitizing, limited capacity, limited hours, and donation back-logs. A big mahalo to all of you who worked so hard during the past year.
Nancy Sparacino was able to maintain a full schedule for downstairs workers and so many of you came to help upstairs. We learned from Cathy Young that volunteering is healthy and beneficial for the human spirit. We also learned we can have a lot of fun doing it.
Although Assistance League of Hawaii is “on vacation” for the summer, the Thrift Shop surges forward. We need to maintain our staffing for downstairs while the “upstairs crowd” supplies the needed items for sale. We know that it really takes a village. Please continue to offer your time and service during the summer months, as you have so generously done in the past. Perhaps the fact that you can now get fully reimbursed for street parking will be an extra incentive.
We will continue with our Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday hours. You will be notified if there is any change. Please continue to share any ideas or concerns you have about the Thrift Shop to the committee.
Great news: Sales for the month of May totaled $25,307.10. This averages out to $1,947 for each of the 13 days we were open. Thanks to everyone!

Where there’s a will, there’s a way! Despite all the challenges of COVID-19, our amazing members have donated more than 13,000 hours of service in the last 11 months! Success at our First
In-Person Regular Meeting
|
|
Assistance League of Hawaii's First Regular Meeting, since COVID-19 restrictions were implemented last year, was held at the Outrigger Canoe Club on May 12 in Waikiki.
Among the many items on our agenda were the installation of our new Board of Directors (photo at the top of this newsletter), installation of Committee Chairs and recognition of our new members.
We also celebrated Louise Frye's 100th birthday (photo appears after the President's column) and received a Legislative Certificate from State Representative Della Au Belatti recognizing Assistance League of Hawaii's 50th Anniversary (photo above with President Mary Monohon).
We were also treated to music by the Sounds of Aloha barbershop quartet (photo below) and got a chance to mingle with each other, live and in-person. We also hosted a Zoom virtual session for members who wished to appear via teleconference.

I explained how important thank-you notes are and encouraged him to continue to send. This was the first one I ever received something like this from a Hale Kipa student.
Since I taught at the University, I required students to send thank-you notes after job interviews, since the students that did were more likely to get the job.
