Dear Colleagues,

I would like to share an advance copy of a message from Provost Jensen that will be distributed later today. Dr. Caroline Schauer will soon be announced as the new interim associate vice provost for faculty advancement, and I am pleased to share that Dr. Jin Wen, associate dean for faculty advancement in the college, will add to her role serving as interim associate dean for the research enterprise, both effective January 1, 2023.

In addition to the Provost’s remarks, I would like to share the following:

As associate dean (AD) for research and faculty affairs from January 2020 through June of this year, Dr. Schauer guided the relaunch of the college’s committee on DEI, which made significant early progress in updating our approaches to equitable faculty training and search processes, and ensuring our policies around workload and review are more inclusive. She transitioned to AD for the research enterprise this July, but as an advocate for historically underrepresented groups in engineering at all levels, she continued her long-time commitment to DEI efforts. For this, she was named the inaugural Margaret C. Burns Chair in Engineering, a position that was established to support a faculty member who champions women, minorities and members of the LGBTQ community.

Reflecting on her various AD roles, Dr. Schauer noted, “serving the college as the AD of both research and faculty affairs has been an amazing experience and I am truly grateful for all of the faculty who have served on committees and working groups with me. Your voices have made the college stronger, more inclusive, and welcoming. I look forward to taking this energy to my next role. As the inaugural AD for faculty affairs for the college and the first position of its kind in the University, I gained great insight as to where we have been and what great accomplishments we can achieve moving forward.”

Dr. Jin Wen was appointed associate dean for faculty advancement earlier this year.

In just the last few months, she has made significant progress supporting our academic community, including hosting a hybrid new faculty orientation, as well as the new Faculty Research and Advancement lunch series. Given the recent and former link between the AD positions, I am grateful she has agreed to serve as interim AD for the research enterprise.

“I am very excited to serve the college as the interim ADR,” said Dr. Wen. “I will continue the efforts that Dr. Schauer has initiated to support our faculty to perform world-class research, while promoting a respectful, inclusive, equitable, and diverse community within Drexel Engineering. I also look forward to working with the Drexel community to develop programming around college and campus strategic research areas.”

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Schauer and thanking her for her service, and welcoming Dr. Wen to her expanded role.

Sincerely,
Sharon

Announcing Caroline Schauer as interim Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Caroline Schauer, PhD, has been appointed interim associate vice provost for faculty advancement, effective January 1, 2023. In this role, she will work collaboratively with colleagues in the Office of Faculty Advancement and stakeholders across campuses and units to manage faculty lifecycle processes, support our faculty’s continued growth and development, and advance critical policy development and infrastructure.

An internationally known expert in natural polymers and polymer processing, Dr. Schauer is the Margaret C. Burns Chair in Engineering, a position that was established to support a faculty member who champions women, minorities and members of the LGBTQ community and which she earned for her long-time commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. She is also associate dean for the research enterprise in Drexel Engineering and professor of materials science and engineering with 19 years of service to the University.

Over the past decade, she has held progressive leadership roles within the college, beginning as MSE graduate advisor in 2011 and serving as the inaugural associate dean for faculty affairs (ADFA) from 2018 through 2022, before being appointed associate dean for the research enterprise earlier this year. As ADFA, Dr. Schauer was instrumental in updating the college’s tenure and promotion policy, onboarding new faculty, creating a bi-weekly newsletter, chairing the college’s cluster hire initiative as well as DEI committee. Additionally, Dr. Schauer serves as the founder and co-director of the Drexel Woman Faculty Association.

As Dr. Schauer transitions in January to assume the interim associate vice provost role, Jin Wen, PhD, associate dean for faculty advancement in Drexel Engineering, has been appointed interim associate dean of the research enterprise to ensure a smooth transition in the college. I would like to sincerely thank Senior Vice President Elisabeth Van Bockstaele for chairing this search as well as the search committee for their time and dedication to the search.

Please join me in welcoming and supporting Dr. Schauer in her new role!

Sincerely,
Paul E. Jensen
