Epistle Reading of the Day
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 2:10-16
Brethren, glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. All who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

ARTOKLASIA – THE BLESSING OF BREAD
The Blessing of Five Loaves of Bread is a brief service of thanksgiving through which we express our gratitude for all the blessings of life. Oil, wine, wheat, and the loaves of bread which are used in the service, are viewed as the most basic elements necessary for life. The Blessing reminds us of the miracle of the multiplication of the bread and fish by which Christ fed the multitude. This Blessing is usually offered during Vespers or after the Divine Liturgy on Feast days and other special occasions. After the Service, the bread is cut and distributed to the congregation.

Word about Cremation - Orthodox Christians should reject cremation, in accordance with the Church’s teachings about the sanctity of the human body and its role in our salvation. Orthodox Christians believe that in the General Resurrection, our bodies and souls will be restored to each other. Cremation is the deliberate desecration and destruction of what God has made and is viewed as the denial of the Resurrection. Cremation treats the body violently, without the respect due to it as the temple of the Holy Spirit. Those who voluntarily request cremation upon death will not receive an Orthodox funeral, either in the church, or the funeral home or any other place. Memorial services with kolyva are not allowed since the connection of the “kernel of wheat” as a sign of the Resurrection has been intentionally destroyed. It is an honor for Orthodox Christians to have a church funeral - our salvation and the state of our souls and bodies should always be at the forefront in our lives and for the lives of our loved ones.

The Prophet Elisha - June 14
The Prophet Elisseus, the son of Saphat, was from the town of Abel-me-oul and had been a husbandman. In the year 908 B.C., at God's command, the Prophet Elias anointed him to be Prophet in his stead. This happened while Elisseus was plowing his land, having twelve oxen under yoke. Straightway, Elisseus slew the oxen and cooked them, using the wooden plough and the other instruments of husbandry as firewood; then he gave the oxen as food to the people. Bidding
farewell to his parents, he followed Elias and served him until the latter was taken up as it were into Heaven (see July 20). When Elisseus received his teacher's mantle and the grace of his prophetic spirit twofold, he demonstrated whose disciple he was through the miracles he wrought and through all that is related of him in the Fourth Book of Kings. He departed full of days and was buried in Samaria, about the year 839 B.C. But even after his death God glorified him; for after the passage of a year, when some Israelites were carrying a dead man for burial and suddenly saw a band of Moabites, they cast the dead man on the grave of the Prophet. No sooner had the dead man touched the Prophet's bones, than he came to life and stood on his feet (IV Kings 13:20-21). Mentioning this, Jesus the Son of Sirach says, "He did wonders in his life, and at his death his works were marvelous" (Ecclus. 48:14). It is because of such marvels that the faithful have reverence for the relics of the Saints. His name means "God is savior."

Saint Methodios the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople

As for Saint Methodius, he was born to wealthy parents in Syracuse of Sicily about the end of the eighth century. Being a presbyter, he was sent as an ambassador to Rome in 815 or 816 on behalf of Patriarch Nicephorus of Constantinople, who had been exiled by Leo the Armenian (see June 2). After Leo's death, he returned to Constantinople; but since he was a zealot for the veneration of the holy icons, he was immediately exiled by Emperor Michael the Stutterer to a fortress near Bithynia. When Michael died, he was freed for a short time; but then, because of his confession of the Orthodox Faith, he was imprisoned again by the Emperor Theophilus in a dark and foul-smelling sepulcher. Since this was not enough for the Emperor's inhumanity, he commanded that two thieves be shut up with Methodius, and when one of them died, that the corpse not be removed. While the Saint was imprisoned there, a certain poor fisherman ministered to his needs. Finally, when the Church received its freedom under Saint Theodora the Empress, the Saint ascended the patriarchal throne of Constantinople in 842. Together with the holy Empress, Methodius restored the holy icons to their proper honor; this is commemorated on the Sunday of Orthodoxy. He governed the Church of Constantinople for four years, and reposed in 846.
MEDITATIONS:
Pride does not allow the soul to set out on the path of faith. Here is my advice to the unbeliever: let him say, "Lord, if you exist, then illumine me, and I will serve you with all my heart and soul." And for this humble thought and readiness to serve God, the Lord will immediately illumine him... and then your soul will sense the Lord; she will sense that the Lord has forgiven her, and loves her, and you will know this from experience, and the grace of the Holy Spirit will be a witness in your soul of your salvation, and you will want to cry out to the whole world: "The Lord loves us so much!"

The Lord wants us to love one another. Here is freedom: in love for God and neighbor. In this freedom, there is equality. In earthly orders, there may not be equality, but this is not important for the soul. Not everyone can be a king, not everyone a patriarch or a boss. But in any position it is possible to love God and to please Him, and only this is important. And whoever loves God more on earth will be in greater glory in His Kingdom. +Saint Silouan the Athonite
Just as people do not enter a war in order to enjoy war, but in order to be saved from war, so we do not enter this world in order to enjoy this world, but in order to be saved from it. People go to war for the sake of something greater than war. So we also enter this temporal life for the sake of something greater: for eternal life. And as soldiers think with joy about returning home, so also Christians constantly remember the end of their lives and their return to their heavenly fatherland. +Saint Nicholas of Serbia
Do not lose your temper with those who sin. Do not have a passion for noticing every sin in your neighbor and judging it, as we usually do. Everyone will give an answer for himself before God. Especially, do not look with evil intention on the sins of those older than you, with whom you have no business. But correct your own sins, your own heart. +Saint John of Kronstadt
You will receive as much love as you offer. If you do not give love, you will not receive love. Look at a mother: she constantly offers her love to her children; she constantly receives love from them in return, so her love becomes ever increasing. But when we want the love of others exclusively for ourselves and expect everyone else to give to us, and if, when we do some good, we are thinking of compensation, then, instead of having priceless love, we have cheap love. This estranges us from God, and we receive love neither from God nor from other people. +Saint Paisios the Athonite

Ο προφήτης Ελισσαίος ήταν γιος του μεγαλοκτηματία Σαφάτ, από το χωριό Αελμούθ ή Αβελμεολά. Τον Ελισσαίο συναντάμε μέσα στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη σαν υπηρέτη του Προφήτη Ηλία. Όταν εκείνος με θαυμαστό τρόπο έφυγε προς τον Κύριο, ο Ελισσαίος συνέχισε το προφητικό έργο του Ηλία, και μάλιστα με πολλά θαύματα. Ενδεικτικά εδώ θα αναφέρουμε ένα. Κάποτε ήλθε στον Ελισσαίο μια χήρα γυναίκα, που πριν λίγο είχε χάσει τον άνδρα της, και του λέει: «Ο άνδρας μου πέθανε και συ γνωρίζεις ότι σεβόταν το Θεό. Και όμως, ένας άσπλαχνος δανειστής του ήλθε τώρα και, επειδή δεν έχουμε να τον πληρώσουμε, ζητάει να πάρει τους γιους μου δούλους του». Ο Ελισσαίος συγκινημένος της είπε: «Τι μπορώ να σου κάνω; Πες μου, τι έχεις στο σπίτι σου»; Η χήρα του απάντησε: «Τίποτα. Μόνο ένα αγγείο λάδι». Τότε ο Ελισσαίος της λέει να πάει να δανειστεί από τους γείτονες όσα μπορεί περισσότερα άδεια αγγεία. Έπειτα, να κλείσει την πόρτα του σπιτιού της, και μαζί με τους γιους της να γεμίσουν τα αγγεία αυτά από το δικό τους αγγείο με λάδι. Έτσι και έγινε. Αφού δανείστηκε πολλά άδεια αγγεία, τα γέμισε με λάδι από το δικό της, που στο τέλος βρέθηκε και αυτό γεμάτο! Έτσι, πούλησε την άφθονη εκείνη ποσότητα λαδιού, πλήρωσε το χρέος και έμειναν αρκετά χρήματα γι' αυτήν και τα παιδιά της. Ο Ελισσαίος πέθανε επί βασιλέως Ιωάς και τον έθαψε με πολύ θρήνο ο λαός του Ισραήλ στη Σεβαστούπολη της Σαμάρειας.
Μεθόδιον φωστῆρα τῆς Ἐκκλησίας,
Τὸ τῆς τελευτῆς σβεννύει στυγνὸν νέφος.
Ο Άγιος Μεθόδιος καταγόταν από μεγάλη και ευσεβή οικογένεια, μέσα στην οποία ανατράφηκε σύμφωνα με τις εντολές του ορθοδόξου χριστιανικού πνεύματος. Γεννήθηκε στις Συρακούσες της Σικελίας και ήλθε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη επί Λέοντος του Ε', για ν' αναλάβει κάποια πολιτική υπηρεσία, άξια της υψηλής παιδείας και ικανότητάς του. Τότε στη Βασιλεύουσα, επικρατούσε το ζήτημα της προσκύνησης των Αγίων εικόνων. Ο Βασιλιάς Θεόφιλος, επειδή εκτιμούσε την παιδεία του Μεθοδίου, προσπαθούσε με διάφορες περιποιήσεις να τον πάρει με το μέρος του. Αλλά ο Μεθόδιος τον παρατήρησε σκληρά και ευθέως, για την ανόητη στάση του απέναντι στις Άγιες εικόνες. Ο Θεόφιλος εξοργισμένος, τον φυλάκισε στο νησί του Αντιγόνου, μέσα σ' ένα τάφο μαζί με δύο ληστές. Αργότερα όμως, επειδή του εξήγησε κάποιο δύσκολο χωρίο, σχετικά με τις απόκρυφες επιστήμες, τον αποφυλάκισε υπό επιτήρηση. Μετά τον θάνατο του Θεοφίλου, στις 12 Φεβρουαρίου 842 μ.Χ. και επί των ημερών της αυτοκράτειρας Θεοδώρας, ο Μεθόδιος έγινε Πατριάρχης Κωνσταντινούπολης. Επί της πατριαρχείας του, καθιερώθηκε η γιορτή της Ορθοδοξίας την πρώτη Κυριακή των νηστειών, έγινε η ανακομιδή των λειψάνων του πατριάρχη Νικηφόρου και Θεοδώρου του Στουδίτου και γενικά, μπορούμε να πούμε ότι επί Μεθοδίου παγιώθηκε η νίκη της Ορθοδοξίας. Απεβίωσε ειρηνικά την 14η Ιουνίου του 846 μ.Χ.
