It’s holiday time again. Time for good tidings, cheer, family, and fun times. No matter what you celebrate, it’s a time when we all like to eat comforting foods, share laughter, and create memories. If your children are anything like mine, they probably already crafted their gift list and handed it to you in expectation; however, with the rising cost of living, inflation is handing us a list of our own, and we can expect to be paying more for basic living expenses across the board.
Thankfully, although limited, should you qualify, there are some ways to get relief. Time is limited on some of these, so you must act fast!

The Asylum Hill Neighborhood Association (AHNA’s) 2nd Annual Green Energy Fair was held at Sigourney Square Park on Saturday, October 15 from 11-4PM. The “Energy in Action Mobile Van” was there and many people experienced the interactive Green Energy Exhibit demonstrating how residents can save money by being more energy efficient. Green Eco Warriors author Leticia Colon de Mejias told stories about how the children can help to save our planet. Free books were provided for the children. Hartford’s Proud Drum and Drill Team gave another wonderful performance.
Residents learned about saving money through Energy Efficiency, Solar Power, Hydroponic Gardens and much more! Residents registered to vote. There were exhibits from Knox Parks, Interreligious Eco Justice Network (IREJN) and Asylum Hill and Immanuel Congregational Churches’ Environmental Action Teams. Children and adults shared their dreams with “Ice Cream for a Dream” and enjoyed apples from Easy Pickins Orchard. Free Hot Dogs were provided to all Asylum Hill Residents from “No Pork on Dis Fork.” This event generated zero waste thanks to the food scrap composting provided by AHNA’s “Garbage to Gold Project.”

A true community project, born from community action.
Thanks to the advocacy of the Asylum Hill Neighborhood Association as well as support from members of the Hartford legislative delegation and others, $1.2 million in state funding is being targeted for the rehabilitation of the landmark Aetna Diner, more commonly known as the Comet Diner, located at 267 Farmington Avenue.
The funding is part of the new Community Investment Fund 2030 (CIF), designed to spur economic development in underserved communities. The CIF was created by legislation I sponsored last year, and I am proud to also co-chair its board.

From The Executive Director
David MacDonald
AHNA holds our 3rd Annual Asylum Hill Partners Appreciation Breakfast
And our Annual Meeting electing residents to our Board of Directors
The 3rd Annual Asylum Hill Partners Appreciation Breakfast was held on Wednesday October 26th at 7:30AM at the 224 EcoSpace Collaboration Centre hosted by the Asylum Hill Neighborhood Association. For AHNA it is an opportunity to thank our partners and update them on our progress achieving our Mutual Goals for Asylum Hill. Many thanks to all our partners and sponsors because their support makes possible our continuing work improving the quality of life in our beautiful neighborhood.
The AHNA Annual Meeting occurred on Monday, November 7th. The Executive Director’s Annual report described all of the activity AHNA accomplished during 2022, making progress on 12 of our 29 Goals in the Neighborhood Strategic Plan. Current Board members, Wayne Benjamin (Comet Diner), Ken Johnson (NINA), Janine McMahon (resident), and Paul O’Mara (resident) were elected to new 3-year terms. New members, residents all, Alexis Dwyer, Claire Bergin and Ted Carroll were elected to their first 3-year terms. We are very pleased to congratulate all of them on their election and welcome the 3 new members to our Board. Alexis has been an active volunteer in Asylum Hill and works with many groups empowering residents. Claire has been a faithful, active member of AHNA for many years and we’re glad to see her step up to volunteer to serve on our Board. As many of you may know, Ted Carroll is the retired Executive Director of Leadership Greater Hartford. He has been a valuable volunteer for Asylum Hill, leading our Strategic Planning process last year, and organizing our efforts to support the city’s DominGO! Open Streets event. We’re very excited to have him bring his expertise to our Board.
