Program Spotlight

Best Start

Best Start Teen Parenting Program supports adolescent and teen parents enrolled in Union County Public Schools. The program's counselors provide guidance on essential life skills for parenting infants and young children, promote positive parent-child interactions, and encourage consistent school attendance and high school graduation.

Students at Monroe High School and Forest High School were able to participate in a Car Seat Safety – Safe Start Workshop through the Monroe Fire Department and learned the importance of proper installation of appropriate car seats and what regulations are needed for each type of seat. They also participated in Toys as Tools Workshop with Charlotte Speech and Hearing. This training focused on how to engage with children during play. Both opportunities provided tremendous information for the parents that participated.

2025 started out with a healthy delivery for one of the Best Start students as the first baby born in Union County. The Best Start counselors are excited about this mother's enrollment in the welding program at SPCC that will begin after graduation. Building relationships and increasing parenting skills while also preparing these parents for the steps after graduation, is reflected in the plan for this young family. Congratulations!

Story Spotlight

Quiero a mi papa Porque (I Love My Daddy Because) English / Spanish

This book begins with a heartwarming scene between a human parent and child but moves on to loving care in many animal families. "He sings me songs," says a gray wolf cub. "He keeps me safe and warm," says a young penguin. Children will love reading about how baby animals spend time with their dads.

Board Member Spotlight

Ms. Nina Chaffin

Ms. Nina Chaffin has been serving on the Alliance for Children Board of Director's since 2013 and was recently added to our Executive Committee. Ms. Chaffin is the Director for the Union County Library. Ms. Chaffin joined our board because Early Literacy is very important to her and the libraries work aligns with many of the programs the Alliance for Children offers. She knows it is very important to ensure that the community can all work together to maximize the success of the kids in Union County during their academic journey. Ms. Nina Chaffin has been married to her husband Jim since 2019. She has two boys, Archer age 10 and Elliott age 8. Her husband Jim has two boys, Codey and Brady who are both married. A fun fact about Nina's family is that Brady, Codey, Jim, and herself all work for Union County. We are so thankful for Ms. Chaffin and her service on the Alliance for Children Board of Directors.

North Carolina Pre-Kindergarten is a free NC funded program, serving eligible four-year-old children the year before kindergarten. NC Pre-K Spotlight

NC Pre-K children enjoy participating in activities with their classmates! These activities help the children learn to play games, take turns, and cooperate with their friends and teachers. In the discovery interest area, they learn new concepts together. Creating art helps build fine motor skills and learn patterns to strengthen math skills. For English language learners, hearing and talking with their friends and teachers helps build vocabulary to communicate needs and ask questions to extend learning. The learning benefits are limitless when participating in activities in the classroom.

‘Hard times on top of hard times’: lessons learned from families and child care providers following Helene

Three weeks after Helene hit western North Carolina, Marcia Whitney thought she was close to a breakthrough. The president of Verner Center for Early Learning was desperate to reopen and help their families and children return to at least some of their routines. Through her involvement in the Rotary Club of Asheville, Whitney secured a donated water filtration system, capable of filtering up to 20,000 gallons per day. Locals with water engineering experience had set it up, and it was ready to go.

But the N.C. Division of Public Health’s environmental health specialists wouldn’t approve use of this water for the Verner Center’s two facilities. The reason? Though the water tested as clean, the filtration system didn’t have a chlorine residual — a detectable level of chlorine required in the public water supplies by the EPA — to add to the water.
