When the founding fathers forged the United States of America from the 13 British colonies, Benjamin Franklin was said to have proclaimed the creation of “a Republic...If we can Keep it.” This presentation, by Education Specialist Jeffrey Urbin, highlights some of the key rules, rights and responsibilities necessary for the maintenance of a healthy and successful democracy.
The FDR Library-hosted virtual conference takes an in-depth look at the current state of Holocaust scholarship and how digital humanities are changing the way research is conducted and disseminated. There are a limited number of tickets to this event. #fdrconference
This crocheted picture was sent to Franklin Roosevelt by Meri Ciconi of Jeannette, Pennsylvania. it is sewn over a piece of yellow silk upon which had been appliquéd blue and red silk which show through the open portions of the crocheted American flag, forming the color components of the flag.
FDR made his first visit to Warm Springs on October 3, 1924. This film includes scenes of FDR at Warm Springs, including rare footage of FDR in his wheelchair, selected from the LeHand Home Movies.
Fala traveled with FDR extensively, but his most mysterious and controversial voyage took place in 1944 and led to one of the most famous campaign speeches in American political history. Thanks to a recent donation to the Library we now have a first person account from U.S. Navy seaman Douglas MacVane who was serving on the USS Baltimore.
