Eleanor Roosevelt was often on the move during World War II conducting inspection tours at home and overseas trips to demonstrate American support for other Allied nations. Her most ambitious and dangerous foreign trip was a 25,000 mile tour of the South Pacific in 1943 as a representative of the American Red Cross. She wore this uniform during that trip.

American aviator Alys McKey Bryant (1880–1954) was the first woman to fly on the Pacific Coast and in Canada. Bryant sent this postcard to Eleanor Roosevelt on the 25th anniversary of her historic flight in Vancouver.

On March 29, 1941, Eleanor Roosevelt flew with pilot C. Alfred "Chief" Anderson at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama. It was a historic moment. (Video, 28:18 minutes)
