Dear MVCDC Supporter,

There is so much to share about MVCDC!

One thing many people don't know is that our Early Head Start program is the largest in the state. We serve 700 babies and toddlers from 6 weeks to age 3. Some mothers need care for their babies because they're working or going to school. Others opt for our home-based program where we support the family in their home, helping them understand their child's developmental needs and the importance of giving their child lots of stimulation through talking, singing, eye contact and more.

Our Infant/Toddler teachers are brain-builders — they're supporting children in those all-important early years when babies' brains are literally developing faster than at any point in life. The foundation is being set for all their later learning.

In recognition of how hard our teachers are working and the importance of their work, we've raised our salaries — up to 18% depending on qualifications and years of service. This is helping us hire and keep qualified staff. Children need consistency, and we want them to have strong bonds with their teachers.

We're so proud of all of our incredible teachers who are giving children experiencing poverty a great start!

Gratefully,

Berta Velilla

President, Chief Executive Officer

Check out the construction progress at Lincoln Hill

Our new $12 million, state-of-the-art Lincoln Hill Early Learning Center in East Dayton is looking fabulous. We’re hoping construction will be finished in January and that we’ll be welcoming young children in April.

The center will have 14 specially designed, age-appropriate classrooms for 250 young children and expansive indoor and outdoor play space.

We’re excited to be partnering with East End Community Services, the Mission of Mary Cooperative and the University of Dayton to support our families and children at the site.

We are so grateful for the generous financial support of the National Office of Head Start, the City of Dayton, Montgomery County, Preschool Promise and The Dayton Foundation.

Congratulate our Food Champion

Brad Currie was chosen as the 2024 Montgomery County Food Champion. Brad received this award from Montgomery County Commissioner Judy Dodge for all his efforts over the past nine years working with our nutrition specialists, cooks and nutrition aides to provide the high-quality meals that our children enjoy.

Brad cares deeply about excellent nutrition. He also goes above and beyond to provide fun experiences for the kiddos. Recently, he organized a Fishing Day.

When you see Brad, make sure to say congrats! We are lucky to have him as a part of our team.

Thank you, Shook Foundation

The Shook Foundation is awarding MVCDC a $3,000 grant — a generous gift from Shook employees.

The Shook Foundation is wholly funded and operated by Shook employees with every dollar contributed going to area non-profit organizations.

All recipients are nominated by Shook employees. MVCDC was recommended by Shook employee Adrienne Daniels. In the most recent funding cycle, the foundation distributed $38,450 to local organizations.

Helping young boys love school

Michael Freeman, Jr.’s classroom at the Kings Highway program is piloting our Supporting the School Readiness and Success of Young African-American Boys initiative.

The idea behind SSRS/YAAB is that all young boys, but especially African-American boys, learn best when they’re allowed and encouraged to be active in the classroom. Research and experience show that keeping boys moving enhances their ability to retain information and understand concepts.

Meet one of our amazing Infant/ Toddler Teachers

Christina Wilt, who works at our Springfield Children’s Center, loves working with babies and toddlers.

She often gets to see the children take their first step, say their first word or crawl for the first time.

Families help her create goals for their children. She meets every child where they are — some young learners might be learning to stand or walk, while others are ready to start being potty trained.

“I love when I hear from families, ‘My child really loves you!’ It’s rewarding to know they love me as much as I love them.”

—Christina Wilt
