CELEBRATING BHAU KALCHURI 

Virsingh Kalchuri -- known world-wide as Bhauji -- completed the work of his life of love and service to the God-Man Meher Baba a week ago today (October 23).

  

Born in 1927, Bhau Kalchuri joined Meher Baba as a young disciple in the 1950s, and long served as Baba's night watchman.  Meher Baba gave Bhau many literary projects, resulting in works such as Lord Meher (the most extensive biography of Meher Baba), The Nothing and the Everything (a unique work of storytelling metaphysics), and others.

  

Following Meher Baba's dropping of the body in 1969, and further following the subsequent, gradual passing away of most of Meher Baba's other Mandali (resident disciples), Bhauji was increasingly in demand as a guest speaker at Meher Baba centers everywhere -- including here in Los Angeles.  He maintained a special relationship with our Center (which he referred to as "Meher's Abode" -- hence our Meherabode). In the end, Bhauji was the last living Mandali.  His passing thus seems to represent the closing of one era of devotion to Meher Baba and the opening of another.

    

In recent decades, Bhauji was Meher Baba's chief world-wide emissary from Ahmednagar, regaling generations of Baba-lovers with incessant stories, poems, internet chats, and diverse remembrances of the Beloved.  Today, we will hold Bhauji in collective remembrance in a day-long tribute of thanks, celebrating a life of ceaseless giving.
