Spring is a busy and reinvigorating time of year for many reasons. While we don't create a new strategic plan every year (that happens every four years), we do spend time each spring looking back at our achievements in the previous year and making plans for the current one. Every other spring we gather with the other state programs of the Mid-Atlantic Sea Grant Network to learn from one another, plan joint projects, and celebrate successes. This year's meeting was especially notable for DESG for two reasons. Two of our staff won prestigious regional awards, which you can read more about below. And for the first time the regional meeting featured a two-day introduction to the skills, ethics and mission of Sea Grant for new employees, organized by DESG's Marine Advisory Service Director Chris Petrone. He did an incredible job and the training earned praise from throughout the region.
The Spring season is important in so many other ways as well. In our local aquatic ecosystems, horseshoe crab spawning season is at its peak. You can learn more about that natural wonder, and how DESG and other coastal scientists are involved, by watching the recording of MAS specialist Kate Fleming's Ocean Currents talk at the link towards the bottom of this newsletter. And finally, spring means we are preparing to welcome a number of interns for the summer, some who will work with DESG directly and others we are supporting at partner organizations. We will even interact with other students and interns on our home campus in Lewes who are not in specific DESG programs but will still learn from our staff.
I hope you have all been enjoying a productive and rejuvenating spring as well.
Best wishes,
