THE AUTRY MUSEUM OF THE WEST

Join us to discover the art, history and cultures of the American West. Located in beautiful Griffith Park, the museum features world-class galleries filled with paintings, film memorabilia, Native American Art, and more! It was also voted “Favorite Museum” 2014-2018 by Los Angeles Daily News readers. Our Santa Barbara Airbus will leave from the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Art Center at 8:30 am on Wednesday October 16, to arrive for a docent-led tour, time to stroll galleries independently, and grab lunch (cost not included) in the Crossroads West Cafe. Return time to Carpinteria will be about 3:30 or 4:00 PM.

VIKING KNIT BRACELETS AND CHAINS

Presenter: Paula Gregoire-Jones
Date: 2 Saturdays: October 12 & 19
Time: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Design and create single-knit Viking chains from colored wire using a tool you will make from a dowel and wire. Learn to attach cones, beads, and a clasp to your chain to make a bracelet or necklace. Also explore another variations such as double or triple Viking knit or work with two wires together for a heathery look. No experience necessary, all materials included. Bring reading glasses for close-up work.
SKETCH JOURNALING BOTH OUTSIDE AND INSIDE THE ARTS CENTER

Enjoy sketch journaling both “inside and out.” Our first meeting will be outside with a “walk about,” stopping to sketch, jot notes, and create art memories. The second meeting we will take our time sketching “found objects” or items in the gallery. Materials list sent upon registration.
CERAMICS: SLAB HOLIDAY PLATES AND ORNAMENTS

Time: 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Using the slab method and incorporating the various molds, you will make a variety of holiday plates and ornaments. Glazes and underglazes will be introduced to enhance your work and bring out the vibrant colors of the season. All materials and tools provided. No experience necessary.


UKULELE WINTER JAM

Presenter: Mavis Hansen

Following the beginning ukulele course, this workshop will focus on playing together with new songs every week, for those who have experience and want to jam with others. There will be some advanced instruction and opportunities to perform at local events such as at the Holiday Parade and at Gran Vida. Holiday songs will be included. Bring your ukulele, a stand and a notebook for songs.


INTRODUCTION TO RELIEF PRINTMAKING

Explore the tradition and charm of hand-printed images, rich inks, and beautiful papers. Learn the art of relief printmaking, from drawing and design tips to carving and printing. Bring a favorite sketch or photos to interpret as a graphic linocut. Make black-and-white prints and then explore creative options, combining prints with watercolor and collage techniques. All materials provided.

A poetry reading in the Courtyard given by first generation immigrants, and a presentation by the new Santa Barbara Poet Laureate, Laure-Anne Bosselaar, who is herself an immigrant. Some students of the workshops may also want to read their poems.

ALLA PRIMA PAINTING WITH SHARON SCHOCK

Come study the “alla prima” painting method (or wet in wet) as you complete a small oil painting in one sitting. The workshop will begin with a demo and lesson on value and composition. Students may work from a photo or a still life set up in the classroom. Materials list sent upon registration.

WAVE PORTRAITS: PHOTOGRAPHING THE SOUL OF SURF

This photography workshop will teach you Glenn’s tips and techniques for getting those unique images that only come with a close, personal relationship with the ocean. We will spend the morning capturing the ever-changing moods of the sea and then gather back at the Arts Center to view and edit your images and prepare them for publication or exhibition.

SUCCULENT WREATH WORKSHOP

Mix an array of succulents into a wreath of different textures and hues that will bring cheer to your outdoor living space for the winter holidays and all year long. All materials included.

EARRING BASICS AND HOLIDAY EARRINGS

Using simple wire-wrapping techniques, make earring head pins and add beads for simple drop earrings. Also learn to make a wrapped loop bead and connect to another wrapped loop drop and/or a wrapped briolette to make dangle earrings. There will also be beads for making holiday earrings. No experience required. All materials included. Bring reading glasses for close-up work.


SKETCH CRAWL WITH PEGGY OKI

Date: 2 Mondays: November 11 & 18
Time: 12:30 – 4 p.m.
Price: $95/$85.50 for members
Develop your drawing skills as a foundation towards painting or as a refresher. This course will include lecture, demonstration, and practice including use of line, value, composition, and perspective. Students will work in pencil, but are welcome to use other dry media (i.e. charcoal, colored pencil, etc.) We’ll sketch at two outdoor sites near the Arts Center.


DRIFTWOOD CHRISTMAS TREES WORKSHOP

Celebrate the holidays all year long with a driftwood tree! Christie Boyd will show you how to construct your own beautiful piece of art made of wood from Carpinteria beaches. Driftwood will be provided, but feel free to collect your own before the workshop. Bring your own drill.
