Athens isn't just a city. It's a legend. This is the birthplace of gods, philosophers, and empires, where mythology and modern life somehow coexist on the same streets. One moment you're wandering through ancient ruins that have stood for thousands of years. The next, you're sipping a cocktail on a rooftop with the illuminated Acropolis towering above the city. Few destinations feel as connected to their own story as Athens.

While Athens deserves a place on every Greece itinerary, you don't need an extended stay here. Two nights is the sweet spot. It's enough time to experience the highlights, soak in the energy of the city, and enjoy some of Europe's most impressive hotels before heading onward to the islands or the coast.

The Acropolis is, of course, a must. No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing prepares you for standing atop the hill and looking out across the sprawling city below. It's one of those rare landmarks that exceeds expectations.

For accommodations, my clear favorite was The Dolli. The property is simply exceptional. The art collection, interior design, and attention to detail create one of the most beautiful hotel experiences I've had anywhere. Every space feels thoughtfully curated, blending contemporary luxury with Athens' rich history. If you're looking for the city's standout hotel, this is it.

Another excellent option is MGallery, along with the suites located directly across the street. Both offer a fantastic location and easy access to the city's major attractions, making them ideal bases for exploring Athens.

For travelers seeking a more traditional grand hotel experience, the Grand Bretagne remains an icon. Overlooking Syntagma Square, it delivers the classic luxury and history that have made it one of the city's most celebrated addresses for generations.

I also stayed at Milos Hotel. The property was comfortable and well located, but the lack of an on-site bar made it less appealing for me. After a day of sightseeing, having a great hotel bar can make all the difference, and that was the one element I found missing.

If your vision of Greece includes being by the water rather than in the heart of the city, there are two outstanding alternatives. Four Seasons Astir Palace and One&Only Aesthesis sit along the Athens Riviera, about 30 minutes from the city center. Both offer a completely different experience with beachfront luxury, resort amenities, and easy access to the Aegean while still allowing for a day trip into Athens to see the major sites.

Athens may be the city of legends, but it's also the perfect introduction to modern Greece. Spend two nights exploring its ancient wonders, enjoy its remarkable hotels and dining scene, then continue your journey knowing you've experienced one of the world's great historic capitals.
