Dear GHNO Upper School Families,
As we reach the winter break, the Athletic Department wanted to provide some highlights of the Winter Sports seasons and announce the Spring Sports schedule. Have a Happy Holidays!
Winter Sports Update:
• High School Swim: The High School swim season has been going strong with many hard won races and Personal Records. Notable, the Girls' team took 5th place overall at the 4A TISCA Championships. In the 6A TISCA Championship, we had four individuals and the girls' 200 Medley Relay team make the finals. Also at that meet, junior Cooper Gray took second place in the 500 Freestyle and Sophomore Madeline Griffeth took first place in the 200 Backstroke, setting the pool record in the event. The District Meet will occur on January 23rd.
• Middle School Swim: We have had two middle school swim meets - one victory in a dual meet with GHMV and one second place finish (out of five teams) at the TMI meet in December. Several swimmers have had individual PRs, and the Boys 200 Meter Freestyle Relay team won the event. Up next, we have a January meet at TMI and then a championship meet. The season will conclude at the end of January.
• High School Boys Basketball: The Varsity Boys' team has started off the season with a 5 - 3 record, including winning the Silver Bracket in the Cole Invitational tournament. District play starts on January 16 against Great Hearts Monte Vista.
• High School Girls Basketball: The Varsity Girls' team has played a tough pre-district schedule, going up against several 4A teams. They have 1 win so far with the goal to peak for the District season which starts on January 9 against Young Women's Leadership Academy.
• Middle School Basketball: The boys' and girls' middle school teams have been working hard and competing well in the UIL middle school district against Cole, Randolph, and Marion. The postseason tournament will occur on Thursday, January 22 and Thursday, January 29. Opponent and location to be determined after the last regular season game.
• Varsity Boys Soccer: The boys' soccer team has started their season and played one game so far. They will start the heart of their season after Winter Break including a tournament in Lago Vista, TX and games against GH Live Oak, GH Monte Vista, the SA Patriots, John F. Kennedy High School, and SA Memorial High School.
• Varsity Girls Soccer: The girls' soccer team has started their season and played two very close games so far. They too, will start the busy part of their schedule after Winter Break with games against Holy Cross, Cole, Founders, GH Monte Vista, GH Live Oak, Poteet, Founders, and St. Anthony's.
Spring Sports Information (MS Soccer, HS Baseball, HS Softball, HS & MS Track & Field): If you are thinking of participating in Spring sports please take a look at the first practice information included below, as well as these administrative updates:
• Prior to the first practice, you must register on the GHNO Athletic Website (https://www.greatheartsnorthernoaksathletics.org). Click on the Register Here button and be sure to complete a current Medical History and have a doctor sign your Physical form.
• In addition, athletic fees must be paid before the first practice day listed for each sport. The Configio Link for payment is as follows: https://greatheartsnorthernoaks.configio.com/pd/8017?code=DAaORfZv8g
• Reminder for discounts: As a reminder, the multi-sport discount applies to multiple sports for a particular athlete. The multi-sport discount does not discount multiple sports purchased by the same account (i.e. for a sibling). Additionally, only one discount applies to each product. The highest eligible discount will be applied.
• Update to medication policy: There has been an update to the medication policy for students who participate in athletics. Students participating in athletics are now required to self-carry and self-administer their inhalers or epi-pens, as opposed to having the option to self-carry. This change requires policy and procedure changes for epi-pens during the regular academy day as well. For epi-pens, students will default to storage in the clinic, but if they are in athletics (or an extra-curricular requiring travel off campus) they will be required to self-carry and will change to “self-carry status” for the duration of that activity. If you have an athlete that uses an inhaler or epi-pen that currently stores their medication in the nurse’s clinic, you will need to contact Nurse Larsen (kylie.larsen@greatheartstxschools.org) to get the necessary self-carry form(s) that require parent, students, and physician signature. The form(s) must be completed and submitted back to the nurse before your student can participate in Spring sports.
