JOLABOKAFLOD:

a cozy winter holiday perfect for booklovers

Imagine a holiday tradition combining cozy winter nights, delicious chocolate and the joy of a new book. The Icelandic wintertime tradition of Jolabokaflod translates to “Christmas Book Flood.”

This unique practice reflects the Nordic love of literature and storytelling, as books are given as gifts and the night is spent reading, sharing stories and enjoying chocolate.

CELEBRATE WITH US

Sunday, December 17th

We'll celebrate the season with hot chocolate, free gift wrapping, and festive candy bars wrapped with a note that tells the story of Jolabokaflod.

UNIQUE FIND

We have recently acquired a scarce First Edition of James Baldwin's 1964 play Blues For Mister Charlie, which is loosely based on the Emmett Till murder. The newspaper coverage and murder trial galvanized a generation of young people to join the Civil Rights Movement.

The book is inscribed by Baldwin to legendary jazz musician Bobby Sharp and his mother, Eva. Bobby Sharp wrote the jazz classic Blues for Mister Charlie after seeing the play.

QUOTABLES

Outside, snow solidified itself into graceful forms.

The peace of winter stars seemed permanent.

-Toni Morrison

In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.

-Albert Camus

I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again."

-Lewis Carroll

What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?

-John Steinbeck

Russian writers have a way with aphorisms. They probably spend all winter thinking them up.

-Haruki Murakami

I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage,

and tangled Christmas tree lights.

-Maya Angelou
