Mixing with Your Mind is a highly acclaimed audio engineering guide written by Michael Paul Stavrou, a veteran sound engineer who has worked with important artists including Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder. Unlike traditional technical textbooks that focus heavily on math or software charts, this book centers on the engineer's frame of mind, psychoacoustics, and creative intuition.

COPLAND

BILLY THE KID • RODEO

Morton Gould and His Orchestra

RCA, 1958

$45

Aaron Copland composed the iconic ballets Billy the Kid and Rodeo as part of his mission to create an accessible American style rooted in the folklore of the American West. Morton Gould was an American conductor and composer who bridged the gap between classical symphonic music and American vernacular styles. In this high-energy recording, his "orchestra" is an ensemble of top New York studio musicians known for sharp precision and strong attitude. The snare drumming, for example, adds drama with a crisp sound that mimics real pistol shots. This groundbreaking record helped define a distinct "American" sound in classical music.

QUOTABLES

The thinnest yellow light of November is more warming and exhilarating than any wine they tell of.

-Henry David Thoreau

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.

-Albert Camus

Carefully

the leaves of autumn

sprinkle down the tinny

sounds of little dyings

and skies sated

of ruddy sunsets

of roseate dawns

roil ceaselessly in

cobweb greys and turn

to black

for comfort.

-Maya Angelou

Notice that autumn is more the season of the soul than of nature.

-Friedrich Nietzsche

Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree.

-Emily Brontë

I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.

-Nathanial Hawthorne

Don't you love New York in the fall?

It makes me want to buy school supplies.

-Nora Ephron
