Hundreds of Prayers Ascend for Haiti

Hundreds of prayers ascended on behalf of Haiti and the Haitian people last weekend during the Grand Weekend of Prayer, February 2-4. Individuals, households, and churches joined the live-streamed event on Zoom, the Haitian Ministries YouTube channel, and Facebook. Jose Joseph, Atlantic Union Conference Haitian and African ministries director and North American Division Haitian Caucus director, hosted the program to intercede on behalf of Haitians living in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and across the globe.

Haiti is facing a severe humanitarian crisis with political turmoil, gang violence, and natural disasters. Organizers emphasized the need to join together to pray for peace and the nation's well-being. "If we would pray more, greater things would happen," said Minervino Labrador, Jr., North American Division vice president for Multilingual Ministries, welcoming the viewers. In addition to prayer, each evening featured inspiring music from various artists, followed by soul-stirring sermons. Presenters for the weekend included Lucens Joseph, Southeastern Conference pastor; Luders Julsain, a pastor serving the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Quebec; and Pierre E. Omeler, Atlantic Union Conference president.

Massachusetts Church Receives Grant for ESL Classes

The Canaan church in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, was featured in the Cape Cod Times for being one of five organizations awarded a $5,000 grant from the Women and Girls Fund of the Cape Cod Foundation. The Cape Cod Foundation awarded grants to organizations that "prioritize breaking the cycle of poverty by increasing economic opportunity and self-sufficiency for women through training and educational opportunities," said Kristin O'Malley, CEO and president, in a press release.

The church recently began its second term of ESL and civics classes. Last term saw 56 students in the classes. Canaan church holds the twice-weekly classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Times reported that "much of the funding went to hiring trained ESL instructors and to purchase educational supplies."

Legacies of Liberty

Black History Month provides a special space for contemplation, a moment to reflect on God’s providence and the rich history of African Americans in the United States and in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This historical odyssey, from the crucible of slavery to the zenith of the civil rights movement and beyond, testifies to the transformative power of faith and resilience. Three critical facets emerge, forming the bedrock of the march to freedom, for which we are eternally indebted.
