“The Pacific As A Fallout Sink In The Cold War”

By Robert (Bo) Jacobs, 6:00pm PDT, June 11, 2025

The APG is honoured to host Dr. Robert (Bo) Jacobs for the next talk in our Speaker Series, “The Pacific As A Fallout Sink In The Cold War”. A Professor Emeritus of History at the Hiroshima Peace Institute and the Graduate School of Peace Studies at Hiroshima City University, Bo is a leading scholar of nuclear history and culture.

His 2022 book, "Nuclear Bodies: The Global Hibakusha", has deeply resonated with many of our members. What's notable about "Nuclear Bodies" is its profound humanity, as it brings to light the lived experiences of those impacted by nuclear technologies across the globe. His meticulous research and care for the people behind the history offer a powerful, moving narrative of how nuclear harm ripples through generations.

In “The Pacific,” Bo explores how multiple nuclear weapon states used the Pacific Ocean as a fallout sink. Aware of the massive radioactive clouds yielded by thermonuclear weapons, the three NATO nuclear powers all chose to conduct their tests on Pacific atolls and islands. Rhetorically framed as an empty space, the Pacific Ocean would be utilized as a sink to absorb vast clouds of fallout particles. In this talk, Bo examines the where, what, and why of this history.

The APG is thrilled to welcome Bo for this event. He’s a generous and engaging speaker, and his insights promise a talk that is both compelling and deeply important. You won’t want to miss it!
