Attendance Tools
The early summer is an ideal time to examine chronic absence data from the past school year. If you are working at the school level, use your data from the past year to fill out our attendance pyramid worksheet to assess what level of support is likely to be needed for students who are missing too many days.
District staff can review data to see whether schools, classrooms or particular student groups have made gains in attendance from prior years. These bright spots could be using promising practices that can be shared. Has chronic absence gotten worse? Then use this time to identify the major attendance challenges need to be addressed next year.

Resources
In Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania tackled student chronic absence using three steps which required using data: 1) identify the problem, 2) keep track of progress, and 3) provide support and identify
best practices. The UWSWPA's Be There campaign taps schools, nonprofits, and local public agencies to use positive reinforcement to encourage students to come to school. Be There includes a Buddy Project, which pairs chronically absent students with caring school staff to help cultivate positive relationships. We Belong in School!
A new blog post from Edutopia offers key elements for creating a positive school climate that can motivate students to attend school. In "A Two-Step Process for Reducing Chronic Absenteeism", Maurice J. Elias encourages schools to continue the work of making students feel welcome at school once kids are identified as having frequent absences. Read the post.

Policy Report
Healthy Schools Campaign partnered with the Bipartisan Policy Center to host a dialogue with national leaders highlighting links between education and health.
Their conclusion? Healthy students miss fewer days and are better able to concentrate in class. Read HSC's post that summar
