Attendance Awareness Campaign Update

A project led by Attendance Works

October 4, 2023

Drive with Data from September!

Research shows that children who are chronically absent during the first month of school are more likely to be chronically absent throughout the year!

Reach out to students and families who have already missed 10% of school to build a relationship and help them overcome challenges to getting to school. Prioritize students who were chronically absent the prior year.

Notice if large groups of students from a particular grade, neighborhood or demographic group are missing too many days. Talk with them to understand their realities as well as their strengths, and tailor your strategies. We helped survey families for a new report offering insights about what is needed to address challenges and improve attendance among Latino families in California.

Your district may already produce real-time reports on chronic absence. If not, Attendance Works created self-calculating spreadsheets. Schools and districts can use them to examine patterns and identify which schools, groups and students are missing too much school. We’ve also developed free quantitative data tools on this page.

What will it take to reengage students and improve student attendance? Read our article in the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ October issue of Principal Leadership.

Attendance Tools

Use the questions in our the Understanding the Root Causes of Absenteeism worksheet on this website page to help identify the likely causes of absenteeism. Is this something that you can help your student and his/her family overcome? Or is there an underlying issue that requires additional support, perhaps from the school social worker or guidance counselor.

Reduce absences using these Tips for Staying Healthy, and encourage families and educators to work together to help students avoid getting sick in the first place.

If you notice families experiencing challenges showing up to your program, consider using our Family Help Bank.

Districts can find bright spots by examining local data to identify schools with comparatively lower levels of chronic absence. Our Finding Positive Outliers toolkit provides tools to help find out what might be working to improve attendance.

Attendance Celebrations!

Berkeley County Schools (WV) distributed to families refrigerator magnets with scheduled holidays, early dismissals, and a place to document when students are absent. Check it out

In Struthers City School District and Hubbard Exempted Village School District (OH), two high schools competed in September for the title of best school attendance in their third annual friendly competition.
